Idler Arm Install Question

Hey Gang I have a question about installing sky's idler arm on my tracker


I have removed the bracket, and the nut from the idler arm....

but the idler arm won't disconnect from the steering linkage....

Can I use a hammer to simply up and off, or is the stock bracket threaded?

OK, I'm going from memory here so I'll try my best. 

Take the nut for the steering linkage and screw it on to the stud in the idler arm so that the threads are protected.  Take two large hammers to the problem. 

Place one hammer against the back side of the idler arm and use the other to hit the front side directly opposite.  A couple of good smacks will free the stud from the tapered hole in the idler arm. 

Remove the nut and now you can remove the old idler arm from the steering linkage.  What ever you do, do not hit down on the end of the stud.  This will bugger the threads as well as destroy the ball joint of that steering joint.

Clear as mud?  Good, now go find some hammers!!

Alright Some Success here...

I got the old idler arm off with some heat, original nut is dead so I am going to replace it with another one.


Got New Arm bolted to the frame....lined up steering with new idler arm....

I can't torque down the bolt as the ball joint will spin as I try to torque it down....

any ideas....Ive tried turning the wheels in different directions and using chanellocks  but not luck...

Any Ides? Im So Close!

Belt the ball joint up into position better to try to get it to stop spinning, or use a jack or something to apply pressure to it so you can get the nut on there.

Do you have an air ratchet?  That might also get it on there before the thing keeps spinning.

I will try and find a way to pin it into place tomorrow...


Making my life more difficult is the fact that the original nut is toast and the threads are slightly damaged....should still be able to get it on there but will be a bit hard to get it started...

Hey,

I just got the sky idler arm too.  Everything came off nice and easy for once usually never happens for me.  Hopefully it goes on easy.  I still have not put it back together yet.  Working on some other things first, like changing front seal new oil pan still have to put front diff back in. 

But anyway good luck with getting back on.

I got it back on, i used a cheap $4.00 clamp so the ball join wouldn't spin.

Went back on and appears to be working fine, now I have to modify my calmini brace and fab up some mounts and I will have the best of both worlds
