Greetings from a newbie
« on: December 08, 2004, 04:51:20 PM »
Hello all

My name is Chris Gagne and i live in canada eh? ...ok just couldnt resist with that. but seriously i am about to be a new tracker owner...was looking around for something better then my taurus...didnt like the idea of bringing the summer car out for the winter (1989 Chevy Cavalier Z24) now as to details of the tracker i am about to own (money isnt in hand yet just waiting for it to come in)..It is a 1990 Gmc Tracker Hardtop. Now i have some questions about these vehicles. mainly which engine would my tracker have? and what sort of basic upgrades would be a good start on the way of modding it?

It will have the 8 valve 1.6L
as far as trans ??? high end
models got autos, if it is an
auto, it will be a 3 speed

Mods, power mods would be
exhaust system and header,
you could add a Cam for a little
more grunt.

A mild 2" or a 3" suspension, or
you could get the 3+3 lift for a total
of 6" lift and room for 31 to 32 tires,
you might want gears tho if you get
that big on the tires, and then a low
range T-case would be good for better
offroad performance. You might also want
a rear locker, it makes traction awsome,
a world of difference

It's easy to sink an additional $5K in
the mods department, build it slow and
you won't break the bank

Good Luck,

sorry for not giving much details.. it is a 5 speed manual transmission. the truck runs awesome and has very little rust...all it has in that way is a surface rust area that is maybe about 4 inches in dia. didnt think that it would be that responsive when i was test driving it...well it restored my belief in the imports bein peppy thats for sure was nice to have something that was just ready to roll as soon as i let off the clutch. the other vehicles i considered this week were a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix, a 1993 Buick Regal and a 1992 Ford Explorer...the two cars are out of consideration when i took into account the fact i am a volunteer Firefighter and i know how much i beat the crap out of the taurus when out on calls. so i needed something that can handle it hence why looking at suvs in the first place.

a tracker will take a WHOPPIN'.  I have 34in Super Swampers on mine and have yet to break a rear axle.  a stock tracker is just all around fun to drive and beat on.  I would do engine mods first(header, exhaust, ect..) just so you would get better fuel economy(sp?) and have alot more power.
lockers on a winter beater might not be the hot set up.  it might make it want to spin out in turns.  if you get a locker look into a ARB.
Their are many lifts to choose from.  Calmini 2 and 3in lifts are most used.  BDS and RRO have nice lifts too and their are many place to get coil spacers if you only want about an inch or so of lift.  Many places sell body lifts also but some are easyer to install, shop around.

I've been driving my '96 Tracker almost box stock for four years now.  I put 235x15  tires on it and it does very well as a daily driver and does pretty well for moderate off road too.  I added a trailer hitch to tow my camper, and that's about it.

I know it could be amazing with some modification, but i find a stocker to be adequate for what I use it for, and it leaves the J**p people shaking their heads.
