I did a pony carb swap on my samurai and put it on the scope to find I am running really lean.  It feels like it has a powerband sort of like a 2 stroke motocross bike.  Do I have clogged jets or do I need bigger ones Any suggestions welcome

funny how that works!! I just did the swap! And mine runs rich!! Have you had any luck finding parts for the pony carb? Ive been looking for 2 weeks for a rebuild kit!! Whit no luck!!

I've heard that you can only get parts here in Canada since that is where the Pony was sold.  I thought mine was running rich until I had it put on the scope.  Mine idles well and has good power but hesitates when I get on the throttle.

Ive tryed Lordco,Napa,Canadian Tire, and other parts stores and nothing in the way of a rebuild kit for the pony carb!! Mine runs the same hesitation when you get on the throttle!! like a little bog! Im going to take mine off agian this weekend and make sure the secondary is working fine.

Have you tried Hyundai???  Have you had the carb apart to clean the jets and accelerator pump?  I have a funny feeling that this is just the way they run since mine came off of a running car!  If you did the 1.6 conversion maybe all would be well since our pony carbs came off of 1.6's.  I read jbird's article on the swap and he slightly opened up the secondary before installation but also experienced a stumble under acceleration.

I tryed Hyundai !!! IT is discontinued!!! Funny thing is you can buy a rebuild carb! But no carb kit?

I also tried Hyundai today and jets are also no longer available. The parts guy told me to call dodge because the old colts used the same motor.  I thought the colt was made by mitsubishi.  If he is right, it doesn't mean they used the same carb.

I pulled by carb today and dremeled out the plastic spacer to mate perfectly with the carb and the intake.  The secondary was originally fully closed so I opened it up a bit (3/4 of a turn on the adjustment screw) and matched the primary with the idle screw.  After playing with the airscrew it is 2 turns out compared to six turns out before.  It idles around 1500 rpm's which is a little high for my liking so I'm going to pull the carb again and adjust the secondary screw 1/2 a turn in and then match the primary.  I found these tuning tips at

It runs so much better now   The stumbling and hesitation is gone

With the idle air screw is it in for rich out for lean? or in for lean and out for rich?

It's out for rich (more fuel), in for lean (more air)

I wonder why when i turn mine out the miss go's away? like it leans it out?

Your motor will miss if it's lean or rich.  I thought mine was running rich until I put on the scope to find it was running lean.

If your plugs are brownish with no deposits and your exhaust is quite hot and stinky when fully warmed up, you're running lean.

If your plugs have carbon deposits and your motor sputters when it's cold and perhaps spits out fuel onto your hand when you cover your tailpipe, you're running rich.

Make sure your carb bolts are really tight with a thin layer of rtv on both sides of the spacer.

Your symptoms sound really similar to mine before I messed with the secondary.  I used to have to let it warm right up before I could go anywhere but now I fire it up and go after about 30 seconds.  It doesn't start or idle as good as it did when it was lean but it drives way way better.  Hope this helps a bit.

Anyone out there have any pony carb tuning tips to save us all this trial and error?

Im starting to think im going to do the 1.6 8valve with fuel injection.. Im getting tired of trying to tun my carb!!! HAHA.. Iw as going  to wait until winter but i might do it sooner!!

If I had a 1.6 with fuel injection I would have that swap done yesterday!  Pony carbs don't really care for angles which is so lame off road.  I'm holding out for a wrecked VW.  I've heard you can run 33's without even touching your gears.  Mileage is a plus too.  I played with my secondary again today and it seems that I nailed it the first time, 3/4 of a turn in.
