31-10.5-15 or 31-12.50-15??
« on: June 02, 2007, 10:45:43 PM »
HEy guys i was thinking of putting 31-12.50-15 tsl swampers on insted of 33-12.50-15. <ost seem to say that 33 are a little to big for stock diffs! But is that because they are to wide or to tall? Would a 33-10.50-15 be better??? Would 5.13 gears be better for 31 or 33" tires?

on what rig, tracker? Sammy? sidekick?... t-case gears? stock?

5.12's usually are whats rated for 33's  I currently run 31x10.5's with my 5.12's in a 3 speed auto tracker....

depending on the wheeling you do you can get away with 33's on stock axles, couple people I have known for years on there sammys have done so.  But of course its more stress, and as I send if you do alot of rough wheeling you could run into a broken axle shaft or two.

86 sammy,1.6 8 valve swap, lockright locker in the rear, stock t-case for now. It would be nice to have 33" for the extra height. Do guys find a huge benefit from going from 31" to 33" tires?

It really depends on your driving style. I would go 33s as wide as possible, but thats me. :-\ Is it also going to be street drivin? Stock gears? Locked? Do you have a heavy foot or are you more of a crawler? Need more info.

I'v always ran 33 on my sammi, transfer case stock no lockers an I beat the hell out of it an every year I replace a rear end I run a thin tire 33x10,50x15 to try an put less wear on the vehichle an there better in mudd. I upgraded from 31 like 3 years ago an found the 33 more tippy. so I bout 2 inch spacers an longer whell studds an it kinda evens it out. but i have rolled it on average of 1 a year with or with out the 33's so go figure

Diff gears are always a good idea when going that big. The rest is personal prefrence...

I'm not a fan of going larger than 31" on a Sami, as things start breaking a lot more often. Frankly, I'm a minimalist. I like to keep things simple - I don't like broken things. Some people don't care if they break things, so they just keep going bigger and bigger....

I ran 31x11.50's on my '88 with stock gears. It was a little sluggish on the highway, but did great offroad.

It will be wound up with 31s but zuks kinda like that. If you go to a 33 get a tire that is less agressive to keep the axles alive.

i think rotational mass is a factor here for durability.  how much does a 31x12.5 weigh when compared to a 33x10.5?

Depends on the tire. 31 inch Swamper ssr vs a 33 125 BFG mud terrain, the swamper is at least 25% heavier.

I recommend a  31-32 x10.50-15 tire unless you plan on changing axles.
I would go with a radial mud tire that is not quite as aggressive.Less breakage and longer lasting on hard surface with adequate traction.
Just my 2 cents worth:-)
