Samurai Rear Brake Adjusters Not Working
« on: June 08, 2007, 11:37:26 PM »
My Sammy wasn't stopping as good as it used to so I pulled the wheels and checked all the brakes. The pads were good on everything. In fact the rear brake shoes looked brand new except for some very slight wear on the front edges. So I loosened the auto-adjusters up to put the drums back on and when I got it back together I pumped the brakes up to set the adjusters but they wouldn't move. I had to pull the drum off and move the adjusters out a few clicks by hand. I had to pull the drums and adjust them by hand a few times until they were tight enough. The auto-adjusters never would move them.
The springs are all there but they're pretty old. Do you guys have any ideas as to what I should look at or replace?

On my Vit the shoes have to be adjusted up pretty well or the auto adjusters won't work. It seems like you have to have enough tension on the springs before they will work properly.

My problem is I can't get them adjusted any closer to the drum and be able to get the drum back on. I agree with you that the springs need a certain amount of tension on them before they pull the adjusters into place. I'm thinking my springs have just gotten too old and stretched out.

Does anyone know if there's a drum brake spring kit available anywhere?

Are your drums worn beyond spec?  If so, you'll have to have your shoes adjusted far inward to clear the unworn ridge at the back edge of the drum, but then when you get the drum on, the gap between the  shoes and the worn inner surface of the drum can be quite a distance.

Okay, I'll check Napa for a spring kit. My drums looked okay but I'll double check them for the ridge in the back. That could very well be the problem. After I got the drum back on I did pump the brakes quite a bit and I did some hard stops in reverse and forward. The adjusters never did adjust though.
