Transmission is not shifting. HELP!

1998 Chevy Tracker
1.6 L - 4 cyl. - 16V - Auto Transmission
 ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
I was driving my 1998 Tracker yesterday and the check engine light came on.  I was far from home so I kept driving it back home. 

The RPMs started moving up and down slightly and then a few minutes later the RPMs jumped up high.  It felt like it came out of gear, so I drove it home at 20 mph.  Luckily I was only about a mile away.  It will not shift into third gear, now.

I changed the Trans fluid and filter this morning and added a bottle of TransX, hoping that it would help, but nothing.  I didn't know that the transmission would make the engine light come on.  Is there something electrical that I could check that makes the transmission shift?  Could it be the modulator that is giving me these symptoms?  Any ideas would be helpful, before I start rebuilding the damn thing.

I think a lot of us just aren't very familiar with auto's, since most of us have 5-speeds.

I know this doesn't help, but this is why i drive a stick instead of auto, so i don't have random sucky problems like this.

I have an auto, unfortunetly, it's a 95 obd1. You can have the ckeck engine code read at a local parts store, probably for free. Yes, Check engine codes can read electronic trans problems and i'm sure it doe's have sensors and electrical parts in it to check. Have it read before you do any thing else.

Ok, I had the codes read and code for transmission solenoid and TPS.  I replaced the TPS, but I am still having the problem.  The check engine light went off, but it is still having the symptoms.  I guess the next step is replacing the transmission solenoid.  How difficult and expensive is it to replace?

   I just had that problem,and had my solenoid installed for $40.00.I hate paying anyone to work on my ride,but a recent back surgery left me with no option.So I thought the price was very fair.

Are these trannys only electronicly controlled or do they still use a vacumn assist? I know the 3speeds have a vacumn line coming off the bottom of the intake manifold to the tranny.

most OBD2 transmissions will use shift solenoids to change gears. allmost all the ones i have done are right on the valve body behind the tranny pan. very easy to do just as long as you know which one to replace.

Well, I replaced the TPS and the shift solenoid and it still is not working.  The next step is to save a little money and take it to a shop.
