Sami gets hot after 15 mins
« on: June 13, 2007, 09:24:42 PM »
I have a 1.3 stock engine, gauge is runs fine for about 15 mins and then runs hot after that.
I replaced thermostat (stuck), back flushed the system, new coolant, still runs hot.
Water pump is not leaking or making noises, Fan is turning, shroud is inplace,no water in oil,no water out exhaust. heater is blowing hot air.

I did notice top hose is hot when running fine, then get cool when the engine gauge gets hot... Never boils over I turn engine of before then.

need some help here on what I should next to fix it.

other people's advice so far:
fan, belt slipping, blown head gasket, cracked head, air in the line, radiator bad(blocked), gauges
What next?

I had some problems awhile back... did you change the sensor? Sometimes they go bad... Fixed my problem...

make sure your new thermostat has a bleed hole in it or drill one, 1/16 or smaller, start it up with the cap off and the heater on and run it till warm adding water.

I have just add a new temp sensor and ran the engine again and the gauge on the dash reads half way for about 15 mins then starts climb up to the top. I have turn on the heater and it make it drop some but turn it off and it will climb again. I have checked the oil and exhaust for water and there is none. The radiator never boils over. My next step is to try a pressure test on radiator (check for cracked head or blow head gasket) and buy new gauges and see if it is really getting hot or not.
Also fyi radiator look like it has some missing vents on the top half of the radiator. So new radiator well be step two!

It sounds like your radiator may be plugged up internally. Not fully plugged but enough to slow the flow down too much. I'm thinking you may need a new radiator.

I have zero experience with a Sammy but... I had a water pump on a car once that had the impeller slide off the shaft. No noise no nothing, looked fine didn't move any water. Also I've seen thermostats put in upside down, they don't open very well that way. I hope this helps.

Just take your t-stat out and see if it still gets hot? There is a product called water wetter.. IT brings down your temp up to 15 Deg. They use it in race cars and such.. worked great in my grand cherokee..

Before you goany further get a auto thermometer to see  what the water temp is when gauge shows it getting hot . I have had  three sammis and two of them did what you are describeing both times it was the gauge . hope this helps
