Replacing the Head
« on: December 06, 2004, 10:48:31 AM »
Well, my oil leaks (I'm assuming both cam seals and the front crank seal) are bad enough that I'm finally going to replace the head (and hopefully resolve my super poor compression in #4).

I've got a head that I'm reasonably confident is good.

I'm going to replace the valve stem seals in it with the ones that come in the gasket set.

I'm going to put in a new water pump.

I'm going to put in a new timing belt.

Any tips/suggestions?

Why not just sped a couple hundred and have the head done, so you know its right and your not playing the guessing game?

Because, depending on the mileage,
a rebuilt head can blow out the oil and
compression rings, causing the need for
a rebuild, it would be better to hand lap
the valves and replace the seals, or do a
quicky rebuild, which is just rings and a head.

I guess so. But I guess i'm  just the type of person that would rather do it right the first time.......aka do the motor. if it needs it.

I was in a situation where I was
moving and trying to get the Zuke
fixed and all I had time to do was
the head, I got 20,000 good strong
miles and another 15,000 tired miles
from that job.

Final result she was using and leaking
lots of oil, I forgot to get a new case and
ran low coming home from work, started
knocking a rod and that was the end of
the OEM motor, 240,000 miles and a head
because of a burned valve at 200K miles

I have been told that I got a pretty good
lifespan from that engine, but if I would
have been more carefull with it, it could
have lasted longer
