I know on the sidekick shifter, that piece has a hole big enough to slide up and off the shifter itself.  If that's not the case with yours, just find a stock replacement shifter with the piece already on it.

First, let's address the shifter sheet removal/replacement issue:

Take a look at the following thread by NC_ZUK:

http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,1425.0.html

Your cheapest way to find the hold-down piece that you bent is to rummage through the local junkyards for one.

Since taking one out of a complete transfer case might be considered "Bad Form" (take the whole transfer case!), your next choice would be a vendor like Hawks Strictly Suzuki at 888-SAMURAI who probably has a servicable used one in stock.

Hope this helps!

There was one on E-bay the other night for 6.99.  Might check there.

As for putting it back on I just climb underneath the vehicle and reach up from the bottom.  It's pretty easy to do, especially after the 5th or 6th time.  I was originally looking at taking a large washer and cutting it to fit around the shifter then putting tabs on the bottom to match the points on the metal sleave.  Then just weld a rod on the top with a place to grab a hold of you an you would be able to pop the shifter loose and pull it out without ever having to crawl under the vehicle.  Then I decided I could be even lazier and just crawl under the rig every once in a while.

Additionally, it's a lot easier to put oil in the transfer case if you just pop the shifter off and run a funnel down from the cab then if you decide to use a hand pump.   ;D

That's very true, as long as you know exactly how much to put in.

My vehicle is parked out at the parents place, as I don't have room for it in town.  Sometimes people are out there using the arena for horses (We have a cross country course and such in the back) and they like to bring the kids.  The kids see the cool 4 wheeler and go play on it.  I come back and go to move it in the garage to work on it and find my Transfercase has somehow managed to find the mystical neutral and won't shift.  So I pop it off, use a large screw driver to shift it back into a legal gear selection, and put it back together.

One of these days I need to just fix it so it doesn't do that.  Or just keep yelling at parents to keep their kids off of my things.  And my lawn!  (Sheesh, I just turn 30 and I already feel old.... :P)

As for the right amount, one of those blue Chevron oil containers works great.  But just to be sure I pull off the bolt from the side of the transfer case, then fill until oil starts coming out.  :)
