Sidekick Gas tank in Sami?
« on: November 30, 2004, 02:09:58 AM »
Will a Sidekick gas tank fit into a Sami? If so what mod's are need to make the thing fit properly? Can probably figure it out but would be good to hear from someone in the know, thus, saving time.

Well, as far as I know, sidekicks are all fuel injected, so there's an electric fuel pump mounted in the tank. If your sammy is carburated, it uses a mechanical fuel pump mounted on the engine. But if your sammy is FI, then at least the tank mounted pump should work fine. Then it would just be a matter of physically mounting the tank into the sammy. I never dropped the tank on a sammy yet, so don't really know if the sidekick one would fit or not. You could always just get a fuel cell instead...

It's a plastic or metal fuel tank that can be mounted where ever you want. Check out http://Summitracing.com

For a good size Fuel Cell, ooouch ($$), would probably make life simpler though. Will continue to look at gettin' the Kick fuel tank in as my first option if it will work.

Is your sammy fuel injected or carb?

Yes it can be done,my buddy did it to mine when he
swapped in the 1600 16v. That was about 5 years back
so I'm a little fuzzy on the details. I believe it took a
couple of mods to the mounting brackets.
I never asked for nothing and thats all I got.

The motor I put in is a 1.6L 16v EFI and the tank was out of the Kick donor vehicle. It seems quite a bit larger than the Sami tank so I figure if it will fit the further I'll get on a tank of fuel. Will be taking the Sami tank out tomorrow to eye up the situation. I can probably get it in but I don't want it to be a cheesie install, so advice is welcome and greatly appreciated from those in the know.

It looks as though there is room for it, need to consider the new shock locations with the lift. Some mods to the mounts to accommedate the new tank and perhaps fab a new skid plate for the tank for looks.  Hooking up the filler spout will also need some attention.

I measured the one in my four door, it would fit also but you would have to loose your exhaust pipe beside the tank, the tank would be frame to frame in the back but would gain about five gallons of fuel.

That's what I figured, but I hadn't thought of the exhaust. Thanks for pointing that out, will need to see what can be done with it once we get the tank in. Got the hood clearance problem taken care of so moving on to this mod.
