4-wheel drive transfer box

My last Samurai had a problem in the transfer box. When you tried to come out of 4WD Low range, the shifter would get stuck in a neutral position. The only way to cure it was to  remove the shifter, and just replace it into the socket and the probolem went away.

Now after talking to someone else, he says they all do that.  He has his car for sale, it does the same thing. Do they all do that?  Any suggestions for a cure?

Two words:

Shifter Sheet

It's a less-than-$20 part available at many of internet vendors.

The shifter sits on this plastic ring and keeps everything moving smoothly.  When it wears out (usually after 15 to 20 years), simply replace it.

Click on the "Gear Guide" button at the top of this page to find a vendor.

Do a search for shifter sheet at  Ack's FAQ (the link is in my signature, below) for links to illustrated replacement instructions.

Hope this helps!
