I've got a 1993 Tracker with the automatic trans. I purchased a trans/transfer online and the guy assured me the transmission was good, well after bolting it all in sure enough the trans works great, but the transfer is locked in 2wd. It seems as though the transfer case's shifter is in the neutral position, and it pushed foward into what would be 4 low but doesn't engage anything, anyone know what the culprit may be? I have a good transfer on my old trans, but how big of a headache is that to change? Does the tranny have to come back out? Thanks in advance for the help.

It sounds like somebody did not put the t-case shifter in correctly. You can access and remove the shifter by renoving the console, shifter boots, and the retaining ring, without pulling the t-case.

If the shifter isn't installed right it will cause mucho headaches and it can be put back in the wrong way.

"sheet"? The Kick shifter is metal on metal in the t-case, no bushing like the manual transmission. What happens is the flat end of the shifter that sits within the shifting forks can be put in wrong if you dont pay attention to how it came out. The forks need to be placed into the proper configuration to what mode it is in (2wd,4wd,4wd-low) Then the shifter needs to be placed in the open gap within the forks and secured down.

You might have to pull the shifter and line things up with a big screw driver.  I didn't put mine together quite right and it stuck me in Neutral on the back side of a trail system.  Luckily we knew the DNR worker up there that weekend and he opened the back gate so we could pull it out.

On the above subject, I would agree on the shifter not being installed correctly. I saw this on a buddy's truck we put a body lift on. He went to reinstall his extended shifter, and didn't get it put back in the way it came out. It shifted into 4low and stayed there. But it was an easy fix.

Any word on the progress of this? Didja fix it?

Thanks for the info, I'll try to get to it this weekend to r&R the shifter, this is kind of a winter project truck that needs some pretty major TLC. I assume that it won't be as easy as removing the shifter, putting it into the space and going, is there any procedure for setting the shift forks? Thanks a bunch  

No, it's really pretty much that easy,
make sure the T-case is in 2wd hi and
pull the shifter.

The shaft on the left side is the 2wd/4wd
shaft, the right side is the low gear shaft.

The shafts should be forward, and the shifter
goes into the left side, if I'm not mistaken
