Help! Installing temperature Guage in 1.6 16 valve
« on: July 25, 2007, 05:34:18 PM »
I purchased set of guages, would like to see pic of temp sending unit mounted in a sidekick 1.6 16 valve engine.  Would like to know where to mount it, and what is necessary to mount it.  ANy help greatly appreciated.

The temperature sending unit screws into the front face of the intake manifold under the thermostat housing.  It's the smaller of the two sensors in that vicinity.  It is easy to spot because it is positioned so that it faces forward towards the radiator rather than towards the wheel well.  I believe it can be removed with either a 10mm or 12 mm wrench.

This sender only drives the meter in the dash cluster.  The other, larger sensor in the same vicinity on the intake connects to the ECU.

BTW, the sensor is interchangable with the Samurai 1.3 sensor so you can pick up a replacement off a dead 1.3 engine in a salvage yard..

Hope that this helps!

Did you get mechanical gauges? If you did you may have to do like I did. I took the water tube that goes into the block behind the waterpump off and welded the adapter for the sensor in a hole I drilled into the back of the tube. It is capped off on the end and big enough to do this. I could not find a hole in the water jacket that was anywhere close to being big enough for that sensor.

I was going to do that but ended up using the 1.3 water galley which has the pipe coming out the back. Most of the installations I have seen use an adapter in the top hose like the one in the link below:

That in-line adapter is a good idea, first time seeing one. I was in a bind and would not have wanted to wait for that to come in the mail.
dsumers, the tube I am speaking of has a line off the intake going to it, the bottom radiator hose going to it and a heater core hose going to it. Drain your coolant and remove those three lines from the tube. The tube is under the intake so it is a little hard to get to but I have done it a couple times. There is a bolt with a 10mm or 12mm head on it that is holding the tube to the block. You may not be able to see it so feel alnong the top off the tube for a bracket and the bolt will be through that bracket. After removing the bolt you can twist the tube and remove it from the block. There is an o-ring on this tube that you will want to replace. Go to a hardware store and find one or contact hawk suzuki and have one in hand before removing the tube.
If you want to spend the money I would go with adapter Rhinoman gave the link for. Much faster and easier than the way I did it. Just make sure our radiator hoses are the same size as the adapter.

Lol, I would have gone with your way as I think its a much neater idea and it keeps the top hose stock. However I was fitting the 1.6 into a 413 so it was easier to use the 1.3 water galley.
Anyway here is a pic of the pipe we are referring to.

Thanks Guys, after looking at engine again, I found that there was a plug installed directly above temp sensor, I removed the threaded pipe plug, tapped out to 1/4 npt, and was able to install temp sending unit there with plenty of room and depth to spare.
