Converting 2wd to 4wd
« on: November 29, 2004, 12:01:43 AM »
I know this may sound crazy, but I have a 95 tracker with 4wd and a 92 without.  The 1992 is in great shape and I would like to take out the 4wd system on the 95 and put it in the 92.  Both vehicles are automatics, the 92 has an 8 valve engine and the 95 has a 16 valve. Has anyone ever done this before? Anything thing I need to be aware?

What is it about the '92 that is in so much better shape that you want to do the switch.  If it is the body, it may be easier to just move the '92 body to the '95 frame.

I have heard of converting a 2wd sammi to 4wd, but the solid axle is much easier to switch than an IFS.

I don't imagine that they would have different frames, so just compare the mount points for the front wheel drive system and see if there is a corresponding mount on the 2wd frame.  If there is, either switch, swapping out the suspension or the body should be a "bolt up" operation.  But, I think the body swap would be easier (for me at least) because you wouldn't have the front end alignment issues.

Wish I had 2 vehicles to do a swap
like that, you got a perfect setup, donor
vehicle and recipient vehicle.

You can just swap the 4WD or you
can swap the engine too, and you got
all the stuff to do it

If you have the space and tools, and some
time to kill, I'd say go for it, and when you
are done, can I have the 95   ;D  I need a
DD so I can trick out the Turbo Zuk

The only other thing than what's already been mentioned is that the tranny in the 95 and 92 are likely to be different. I fairly certain the transfer case from the 95 will bolt up to the 92, but you might also think about taking the 95 tranny (if it's in better shape than the 92).

Do you know if the 95 is a 4 speed auto or not?
