O-rings in the Trackick AC compressor?
« on: July 31, 2007, 08:08:20 AM »
How many o-rings are in the AC compressor?
92 sidekick, 16V, R12 compressor.
Anyone have a diagram of the internal parts of the compressor (exploded view diagram)?
I know there is one o-ring on each hose that bolts into the "head" of the compressor, and there are 4 o-rings under the "head" assembly (mine was leaking under the head, so I took it off and found there are 4 orings under the head....wished I had known this when I replaced all the other o-rings before).
Anyway, I need to know if there are any other o-rings/seals/etc. inside the compressor body, that I should replace......or should I just leave the compressor body together and not screw with it?
Thanks.

Go to the dealer and ask them to source out the proper o-rings for the compressor and also the hoses off it. They will be special o-rings to be able to handle the mineral oil that is in the A/C to lubricate. They will be green o-rings wich are made of a different material than yer generic black o-rings. The dealer will know what you need and I can't see them being that expensive.

I already have a "kit" of the green o-rings, in various sizes......I was just wanting to know if there were any inside the compressor body that should be replaced (without having to take it apart), while I was replacing the ones in the "head" of the compressor.

dont take the compressor apart - they are very easy to screw up. are you going to do a retro fit to r134a? if so i would recommend replacing all the o-rings, the reciever dryer, and the orifice tube if it has one. just make sure you dont vent any r12 into the air - it is an ozone depleting substance.

The story is.....I had already converted it to 134a, thoroughly flushed the whole system (except compressor...just drained old oil out and flushed it with the "new" oil and refilled) replaced drier, replaced all the o-rings in the line connections, pulled vacuum and recharged with 134a....everything had been working fine....until the other day, when the AC stopped working.  Jumped the pressure switch, so the compressor would run (for testing purposes only, not for actual use) and I could see there was dyed refrigerant/oil leaking out of the compressor somewhere.  Shut everything off, then I could hear it leaking.  Took the compressor off and could see it bubbling out from under the "head" area of the compressor.  I took apart an old compressor, and sure enough, I found out there are o-rings under the head (didn't know that before, or I would have replaced them, when I replaced all the others  ::) ).  Anyway, I just ended up replacing the 4 o-rings under the head (one was tore/split completely in two...no wonder I had an AC leak  >:( ) and not opening up the compressor, so hopefully everything will hold together now.
Thanks for the advice.
