Hooking up trailer wiring harness to 2002 XL-7
« on: August 04, 2007, 10:26:30 AM »
Help! I have a 2002 XL-7, and I will be renting a U-Haul trailer in two weeks. I bought the U-Haul converter wiring harness, but they wanted to charge me $70 to do the hook-up. Well, I am pretty handy with wiring, so I want to install the thing myself to save the cash. The only problem is I cannot find the wiring color codes for the tail/turn/brake lights anywhere! Suzuki has a manual for it....at a cost of $150.  :-\  I have been scouring the web for the past week, but no one seems to know what the color codes are. Does anyone here know what they would be?

The harness is a four-way plug attached to a 3-2 converter. The idea is that it sits in the left-side light bay, and the wires are attached in parallel to the wires coming off the Suzuki's light wire setup. The wires on the U-Haul unit are as such:

White wire to chassis ground
Brown wire to tail light
Yellow wire to left turn signal
Red wire to brake
Green wire to right turn signal (this lead is about 4 feet long to go to the other side of the vehicle and hook up to the right side light turn signal lead).

So when I pull out my Suzuki light, what color leads should I be hooking what U-haul leads to?

Please help! I am going nuts trying to find what I think should be an easy answer!  :'(

I can't speak for the XL7, but the trackers of the same year were already wired for trailers.  A plug was in a compartment just inside the tailgate on the driver's side where the jack was stored.  It's strictly a plug-in deal once you buy the wires with matching plug.  Not the case for you?

I wish that were the case, as it would make it so much easier. But I have not found such a plug yet.  :'(

Actually, WTF was I thinking last night??  You're set, dude.

You definitely do have a plug like that.  I swapped ALL of the wiring in my '03 Tracker out and replaced it with the harnesses from an '02 XL-7 (somehow forgot that little detail last night..), and my trailer harness plugged right in  both before and after the swap.

I do recall that, in the Tracker's originally, the plug was a pain in the neck to find and get a hold of.  Needed long skinny fingers.  I didn't pay attention to what panel it was behind when removing the harness from the XL-7, though.

Sorry beercheck. I wish it were so, but I think my XL-7 is different from yours. My jack is not stored in the back, but is instead under the front seat. Here is a pic I just took of my XL-7 showing the exact same location you showed me on yours:

I pulled the panel out to see what was behind it and I only found the wire set that runs to the light assembly. I then discovered that this same wire set was accessible by simply popping the light assembly itself out, which I did. Here are two views of the wire set that sits behind this panel. You can see that the only plug is the one the goes directly to the light assembly.  There are no other plugs or hookups other than what is here:

And when I went to U-Haul to get the wire harness, they told me this was the set-up that I needed:

I was originally hoping U-Haul would tell that all I needed was some sort of plug-in that went in-between the Suzuki's plug and the light assembly, but they made no mention of such a thing. I wish they had done mine the same as yours, beercheck. It would have made it so simple to do. And I'm not adverse to doing the hard-wiring at all. I just need to know for sure what wire from the car goes to what lead on the converter.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, I remembered the jack was elsewhere, but I didn't recall if there was an access panel or not.  IIRC, the plug was right by the rear air installation, which is a little forward from where you were looking.  I guess they could have included it only if you got the air.  Dunno.  Someone with an XL-7 and trailering will chime in eventually.

Dunno what that harness is they sold you.  Got mine off of eBay or JCWhitney, can't remember.  Simple plug and play setup although the instructions were wrong for our XL7.  I figured it out though.  No wire cutting or splicing involved.

Works fine the few times I've used it.  The connector mine connected to was located behind the plastic on the driver's side (US) of the rear storage area.  The hardest part was figuring out how to get that big plastic piece off and not screw it up.

I discovered a rubber drain plug near there and cut a whole in it, ran the wires through there, and then RTV silicone'd the hole shut around the harness.  Ran the wires back under the truck to the hitch and I have just enough length to make sure the harness isn't too short or too long.

I'd ditch that U-Haul setup and go find a plug and play wiring harness.  Much easier to do and use.
That reminds me, gotta go hook the pickup's up...

Exactly what I did.  On the SWB Tracker it's pretty much right under the taillight.

Note to self:  If at some point you start mysteriously blowing taillight/instrument cluster light fuses with no rhyme or reason as to when they blow, check to make sure the trailer harness hasn't drooped down, contacted the tailpipe and melted through.  You'll feel pretty dumb finding that after poring over the wiring diagrams for a few days.  Trust me.

I made sure to zip tie and route mine up so it'd be about impossible for it to hit the exhaust pipe.  Basically every single zip tie would have to break and the wires would have to pull out almost all the way past the hitch to hit the exhaust.

My Ranger's rear wiring was a nightmare thanks to the PO's shloppy work so I try to be careful with this stuff.
