4:16 Transfer Case installation problem
« on: August 05, 2007, 02:42:14 PM »
Recently i installed the 4:16 transfer case gear kit from Rocky Road Outfitters and ran into a little problem. After following the instructions and putting it back together we noticed that we failed to put the detent ball back were it came from. Does anyone know where this ball goes and what the easiest way is to put it back in....need lots of help because without this ball the shifter does not stay in gear and the installation instructions do not provide us any information as to where this ball comes from thanks!!!

The order for the check balls and shifters on the t-case are as follows: spring, check ball, shifter, check ball, shifter, check ball, spring.  Upon disassembly you should have ended up with 3 check balls and two springs.  Sounds like you might have missed the one between the shifters.

In a sidekick, there's a little rubber plug on the side of the t-case and during installation, there will be 1 ball that goes in there that rides in between the 2 shifting shafts.  That's where i forgot to put mine, but worked it out before I finished bolting it all up.  The samurai may be the same, or may not.  You have to remove the clutch and shaft, then install the ball in thru that hole, reinstall the shaft, and set in the other ball and spring.
