New to the Zuki world
« on: November 27, 2004, 12:35:37 AM »
Hey everybody, I just bought a 1987 Samurai the other day.  my friend has one and the thing is a blast so I had to get one too.  I am going to do a spring over lift on it so I can run a 31 or 32 inch tire.  I am also going to get the Rock Road High steer setup, my friend has this and it is pretty awsome.  I"m not sure what I am going to do for gearing, I would like to regear the axles now, and do the transfer case later on but I don't know what ratio to go to on the axles.  And here is what I am thinking on the spring over.  I am planning to buy the SpiderTrax SPOA kit with front and rear uppper shock mounts and the Rancho 5000 shocks, but I want to buy the Rock Road 5 or 6 inch spring perches.  Let me know what everybody thinks.  I'm new to these little critters, more of a Toyota guy, I hope thats not a bad word on here like J**p is on the Toyota forums.

Mentioning Toyota here is cool but when you call a Suzuki a J**P or mention the word J**P then them's fighting words. Welcome to the forum, surf through the main screen of ZukiWorld and you will find a treasure trove of information reguarding Sammies and also a list of Vendors that carry most of the parts you seek including the gears. -CZ

welcome aboard ;D ;D
The best thing about Sammies is you don't really have to worry about swapping axles gears out right away cause if you get a RockCrawler gear for the T-case it also lowers your High gear ;D

welcome to the forum. :)
I vote for some T-case gears to solve your oversized tire prob.  alot of vendors make a 4:1(or close) that will bring you back to stock.  but i would be more worryed about the wimpy little 1.3 :-/

I have two 1988 samurai's both lifted and both have a mix of diffrent vendors parts on them, I like my trail tough steering over the rocky road, and I like my sky mfg spring perches over the others for more than one reason, if you go tall you will be tearing up springs and also getting real close to your steering arms with them and also need longer u bolts ect. and for gearing I would go to the 4.89 transfer case gear set or the 6.4 if you only plan on doing it right the first time! Welcome to the board and a never ending hobby, sammies are built not bought.

with gearing the 1.3 will do you, they are not speed demonds.i have an 87 w/t 33s, grs2 and 513s and can run 75-80 mph on the freeway but it's screemin.usally run 65-70.all with 1.3 w/t weber and header and 2inch exhaust.

The Samurai I recently bought has 215 tires ( on the stock 1300 ) and was struggling to get up a hill on the freeway. Changed the T-case for a 4.16 yesterday, what a difference !!! I was going up that same hill as always and was annoyed by "that slow car" in front of me, pushing the pedal just a little more and overtook it !!!!! Never thought that 12% different gearing in high would make that much difference !!

This afternoon I'm going to test it in the mud ( and it ís raining overhere ! ), bet the 82% difference in low will be very, very noticable  ;D

Now see what it will do once the 33" are on, change of R&P I guess  ;)

Strange thing: I've been a motorcyclist for over 27 years ( still am of course ) and have always been praying for sunny weather for an event, now I that I have the Sammy I hope for rain and mud for an event  8)

i actually bought a samurai today, a 1984 sj410 lwb
apparently it came with a 4:1 rock lobster case stock, but the old owner stole it and swapped in a t-case from an 83...
somebody else might know what years they made these and i would assume only the 1.0L got it

also the sj410 has like 4.11s so maybe??? they could be swapped in, hardly worth doing that though

i'd like to know this myself

If I had a sammy.  I'd drop in a complete kick rear end, then I could go 5.12 gears in diffs.  Then build a widened front end to match.

That way you get gear options, lockers, bigger brakes, strength, width, etc, etc, etc.

I don't want to sound pedantic but a 410 isn't a Samurai. Main difference is in the axles (Sammi is wider)
and the engine (Sammi is 1300). The 410 tcase is around 10% lower than a Sammi, I believe the only significant difference between an 83 and an 84 tcase is that the early one has no switch for the 4wd light. The 41o tcase can be used on a Sammi if the flanges are swapped. The LWB is a good find, any pics?

Here's mine ( a Samurai  ;) ) today in the mud. 4.16 T-case we put in yesterday works great, just put it in second gear, foot of the clutch and GO !!

Well this seems like a good place to have my questions answered.  I'm not going to drive this thing daily, I"ll only drive it on the road if I need to, or just want to  :)  So the T-case gears are the way to go rather than axle gears if I am only going to be running a 31?  I'm going to run the 1.3 for now, it starts and runs good so I'll leave it alone.  My buddy is swapping a 1995 s-10 2.2 4cyl into his sammi and he said I can have his engine and trans, so I may rebuild that engine or drop in a toyota 22r with a 4spd out of a 2wd truck.  We will see.

yaya, samurai is more of a generic term to me, nobody other than a suzuki fan knows what an "sj410" or "sj413" is...
and im wondering if the t-case that i have from the 83 was maybe from a 413... ive heard a lot about people looking hard for the rock lobster cases, so they definitely did exist in some years in some model, they go for a decent price too
no pics yet, its a basic rusty lwb, stock but with 30s, paid 900, runs good, frame good, body bad

My 410 FSM was issued in June 1983. Transfer box ratios for all 410s up to then are given as 2.558 low range, 1.590 high range. Overall ratio is 4.111 (1:1 top gear, 4 speed box). Should be pretty easy to check.
