Sidekick off road capabilities
« on: August 20, 2007, 10:39:23 AM »
Hi everyone!
A couple of days ago I asked about building a Sammy for off-roading (no real rock crawling) and some people mentioned the Sidekick.  Looking at cars this weekend I see several nice Sidekicks, but it is hard for me to invision how these will looked lifted/bigger tires/ etc.  All the Sidekicks I looked at looked like cars not at all like the modified Sammies.  However, I can get a much nicer Sidekick for almost the same price as an older Sammy.

I am only looking at 2dr 4x4 convertibles.

I have a couple of questions about the Sidekick I hope someone can help me with.

1.  Can the doors be removed?  Any soft doors or half doors available?

2.  Other than size compared to the Sammy, what are the advantage/disadvantage of the sidekick.

Thanks alot,
Jill

The doors are really not easily removed on the sidekick. There are some half doors out there but most people find a set and cut them down. The disadvantage of a sidekick compared to a sami are you cant remove doors easily, no ability to fold down windshield and independent front suspension. They are still very fun and capable machines, I currently own a kick and have owned two samis in the past.

A great place to look is the Members Info thread at the top of the forum.  Also the Readers Rides section on Zukiworld.com  They have updated it recently with some newer pictures and rides.  :)

Sidekicks are great, I love mine, but it's dual purpose - daily driver/weekend wheeler.
If I were building a rig for off road only, and I had a choice, I'd take the Samurai. The biggest disadvantages I find with the Sidekick are - the low floor/frame, deep cut wheel wells, limited lift options, with a maximum 3" kit(staying IFS). I could really care less if my doors come off, or my window folds down... That's just extra work!
I like how you could buy a running Samurai, do a spring over axle and go wheeling with 32" tires. It takes more work to do that with a Sidekick, more lift, more fender cutting, alignment...  your centre frame is still not much higher and your wallet is lighter.

Thats for a sami, not a sidekick.
