Front locker or TCase gears?

Front locker or TCase gears?

     I'm having a hard time deciding what to add next to my Sidekick:  a front ARB locker or tcase gear reduction.  Hopefully, I'll eventually have both but for now, can only have one.  If it were you, without consideration of the cost difference, which would you pick and why?

How is your low range gearing currently? Does it suit your needs? For steep terrain, especially with an auto and/or larger rubber or for more technical driving the gears are great but if what you drive doesn't really require them then look at the locker. What I do like about the gears is the way they slow you down and allow you pick your way through an obstacle rather than having to launch at it. I reckon they have to help in reducing damage. Don't get me wrong 'cause I love my front locker too but I would have more use for my gears than my locker but when I do need it it's good to have.

Well I would go with the locker but a REAR locker first...but you might already have that.  If you do then I'd go tcase gears cause if you have a rear locker and then some tcase gears your pretty much unstoppable...if you drive right  ;)

If you have no gearing, I suggest getting the TC gears before the front locker. It is a toss up but the gears will help add finesse(sp) to your wheeling as where a high geared rig with a locker will only cause you to have to tromp on the go peddle more.

I geared the TC in my Sami before adding a locker for the low speed ability it adds. Made it easier/nicer to crawl through stuff as compared to romping on it and bouncing through it.

It all comes down to your driving style. Do you stand on you rig or do you use style while wheeling?

I like to play tank mode, so I would say gears hands down, saves your clutch also,and if you go with a large group you will like them alot, I can get out of my rig in the snow and walk beside it with the 6.4's or what ever the t.t. gears are.

I am with derekj - gears give you control and control is good  ;)

I have found over the years that you actually gain extra traction when you do not spin your tyres and control is the key to acheiving this ( auto's help too ).  You will save your rig as well.

Gears now, lockers later  ;D

Thanks for all the replies!  What ya'll are saying the gears would give me is exactly what I need.  Its going up steep rocky climbs that give me the most trouble and I always resort to launching it and bouncing my way for the most part!  That gets me into lots of interesting places!  Mine is an auto with 5.12 dif gears swapped in, which was a major improvement itself!  And the icing on the cake is the gears are on sale!!!

I have the same setup. 5:12 with the auto. I first got the t-case gears and it made a total difference. Then when I install the lock right in the front I was amassed at where I could go.  Now I'm thinking of selling those Toyota axles that are siting behind the shed.

Go for the gears.

When i recently added mine, it's still taking me a while to get used to the fact that i don't have to ram everything anymore and i can actually drive it all.  Hills up here in washington were getting very steep that my engine would just run out of steam with the gearing and i simply couldn't get up them without a pull or a winch.  My clutch would just slip real bad and the car would just stop.  I have a rear ARB and still haven't done the front, but i still haven't had a need for it since the gearing has helped so much.

Plus the gearing is cheaper!!!

Gears.  I have the 4.7 gears in my Toyota I think it was the best modification I have made so far.
