Hey guys. I just got out of the junkyard a little while ago, and while I was there I ran across a 4runner up on its passenger side. I asked the guy what he wanted for both front and rear axles, and he said if I could get them out before tomorrow morning, I could have them because the truck was going to the crusher  . Well, you guys know that I yanked them out quickly!!

      Here's my question though. I noticed on the Trail Tough site that the TrailSlayer kit needs a front straight axle (79-85), but a rear axle from a 86-95.... Could someone tell me why that is?? The 4runner I scored these from was built in Nov. 84. Couldn't I just use this rear axle? I probably wont buy a kit anyway, most likely I'll fab my own 3 or 4 link...

      All I know is I scored a sweet deal (free always is  ) and just wanted to know if I could put these free parts to good use.

so wouldnt that make the rear of my tracker 3 inches wider in the back than the front with a pre 86 front and 86-95 rear?

Yes it will, but they make a kit for the front to match the rear, I think it uses better brakes and  or hubs, or something to that effect, sky makes a kit. I have a stock pile of those now also, LOL I think I have three front 1985, one rear, two l.c. rears 1962 and one front l.c. 1962 or so,    need more of them, now if I just had a high steer for them.

the trail tough kit includes wheel spacers for the front. I'm pretty sure the skinnier axle will work with wheel spacers but Trail tough would be the best one to answer that. or sell it and buy a '86 and up axle!

i think you run newer rotors on the 1985 under. front axle so you can use the better 1986 and up brake calipers so that makes it a little bit wider... i believe there landcrusier rotors not sure on the year ill find out for you and dont buy then from trail gear there a lot cheaper at napa 

you want the late model front axle I think it's 84 and 85 because they are factory trussed. the rear axle is any late model toyota 4runner tacoma etc because it is indeed 3 inches wider to matcht the IFS and almost exactly 57" WMS to wms which is what a sidekick rear axle is. On the front you run a set of 1.5" wheels spacers which makes the front match the rear. Or you can run sky's kit. the upgradess to the front axle are79-81 FJ80 disks with any newer 4 runner or tacoma  ifs calipers. there are sites out there that detail it but not very well. I did it and I am really happy with the set up.  I bought all my stuff off kragen and over 100 bucks they deliver to your door.  I olse did the backing plate eliminator from sky and the rock rings from trail gear. My axles were 150 bucks for the pair and I rebuilt the axles from scratch.. It's pretty easy.. just like a sammi from what I can tell and not really rocket science... I also upgraded to a better birfield. I am running Bellfields from Dan Bell. He welds a extra material to the factory birfield and then chryos them for strength.. You can find him on the tinbender site or at california - mini truck autowrecking, they stock them.

I own a 83 Toyota and the only difference between 85' to 86' is the axles are wider in the rear if it's from a 86 to 95.
The perches are still the same width as a 79' to 85' which you took it out of right?  It would just push your tires out more in the rear.
