Winchs and water?
« on: August 22, 2007, 08:13:39 PM »
So I have been reading through the old forum posts and someone metioned that their Warn died after taking it through some water.  I can't remeber ever having a problems but I have always a had hydralic wench in the past.  Now that I am shopping for a electric wench for my Tracker does any one here have any imput or experiences with their wenchs and water?

I haven't had a problem with mine getting wet, or even running it in the water.  Like anything with gears though water in the gear system can cause a problem after a while.

Interesting. I' shan't comment on my wench in water suffice to say that shes neither hydraulic nor electric  ;)

I do have a cheap winch. After a lot of driving through muddy water it did seize up. I stripped it and found that there was a lot of mud inside the drum. The gearbox and electrics were all good with no signs of water ingress.

I purchased my Ramsey 8000 cheap due to it not working but part of the time after a few muddy trails. We took it apart, cleaned the mud out of everything, re-sealed it and it has worked great ever sence. I have submerged it many times but have never tried to run it under water.

Okay, anyone who trys to run an electric winch under water gets what they deserve.

Why? you can run a tv set under water, it's only the impurities that hurt things.

I think we had a discussion about this once...  :)  Since it's DC you can run it underwater without any issues.
