Steering Wheel Grip.......
« on: November 23, 2004, 03:02:38 PM »
OK, my '92 Trackers steering wheels worn really slick, its so slick I broke down and bought a steering wheel cover before my hands slipped off and caused me to wreck. Anyone else have that problem? Now, my question is, here in Missouri you don't need actual milage to title a vehicle, and I have assumed since I bought it, it had 104,000. But, as worn as that steering wheel is, could it probably be 204,000? I am curious, thats all, either way, it runs like new. I am also wondering about the timing belt now, too.

I was told the service life of a timing belt on these rigs is around 60k miles. If you have never changed it and have no idea if it's ever been changed, you might want to consider doing it soon. As for the steering wheel, if it never had a cover on it, it could have worn more rapidly than if it had a cover. Mine still looks like new, just a little discolored from age, but I also always ran a cover on it.
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

I have 274,000 miles, all on the
same steering wheel, my guess
is that I have an 89 Japanese
built SideKick, and you guys got
a CAMI built Tracker, I wonder
where CAMI sources the steering
wheels for assembly

Ohh ya, my steering wheel is still
in great shape, not slick, it does
show some wear, but then what
would you expect with all those miles

I bought this Tracker with 104k miles on it (I don't believe it was 204) and the steering wheel was in horrible shape.

The 9 & 3 positions were pretty slick, but from 10 to 2 it was cracked horribly.  From about 10 to 12 the "rubber" material" had separated from the metal core.  That was really annoying because the outer part would rotate around the core while you held it.  Eventually, it separated from 10 to 2.  So, I'd say these steering wheels aren't the best :-/

I ended up replacing it with a pseudo-Grant wheel using a Grant adapter (It has no airbag).  I like it better in appearance and MUCH better in feel.

My steering wheel is almost completely smoothed over...I'm thinking of getting a replacement or if I can find a real nice cover I'll go for that.
