Strength of Toyota PU Axles?

Strength of Toyota PU Axles?

What size tire can stock PU axles handle?

What about with upgraded birfield joints and axle shafts with lockers?

i have been talking to a guy in our club that has a older yota with 38in boggers with stock axles with a SBC.  he never has never broken one.(might be a chevy thing? ;D)  but he was talking about somewhere he found a kit to put axles shafts from a F-450(long time ago, can't remember).  in the rear do a full floater, then they should be able to handle 40's? on such a light rig

38's no problem.. the physical diameter of the shaft is that of D-60 Toys have 30 spline also. The biggest down fall to toys is the turning radius. You can full floater the rear and make it alot better then it already is. gear ratios range from 3:90 to 4:56 from the factory aftermarket 5:29 and 5:71 which I run with no problem..
axle width 53" on fronts and Rear79-85 and 86 and newer IFS 56" on the rear.

Don't forget about all of the 'long/new/super'-fields that are available.

Toyotas have about a bjillion aftermarket parts manufacturer/distrubitors.

Do the PU's come in a 4.88:1 too ?  I know the landcruisers do.

 ;D36" tires work great on Toy PU axles.  You can get a spool for the rear cheap.  I have heard of guys running bigger tires as well without much problem (unless gobs of torque is unloaded).  I am running 5.29:1's and it is excellent.  I also am running the Longfields cuz I don't want to be fixin' alot on the trail.  I pounded the rig and it has held up very well.  AllPro makes the Toy axles with the Ford 450 outers I believe. :o

OK...I've been puzzled by the term "full floater" rear end...ummm...alright I admit I had no idea what a full floater rear end was. So for the benefit of others who don't want to be the one to ask the stupid question of 'what is a full floater', here is a link explaining the difference between a semi-floating and fully floating rear end.:)

Seems like the consensus on many boards is 35" tires with stock birfs, and up to 40's with super/pro/long/smurf... in a toy p/u.  Many say that in a lightweight sammy that you can get away with 37's and stock birf.

I broke a stock birf with 35's in my samurai.  I've got smurfields now and haven't had a problem yet.

You could look into Landcruiser axles.  My wheeling friend has a healthy 350, 36" tsl's, and a rear locker(open front) and he's by no means a light throttle driver.  He only managed to break a ring and pinion in the rear(and that was after ALOT of abuse).  

I'm sure a Samurai with FJ40 axles could run 36-38" swampers assuming you don't run a V8 or crazy V6.  A front locker might require Marfields but other wise it should be fine.

The Landcruiser axles are notorious for weak pinions, but I doubt that would be as much of an issue under a sami for the weight and torque would be much less.  They are offset as well which would help with the rear driveshaft.

thats odd, when my buddy broke his R&P, the ring gear was the one that got all chopped up.  it looks like the pinion was the part that didn't break.  Also, if you were to use a quality aftermarket R&P set, wouldn't that hopefully fix the weak pinion.  After seeing what these axles do with a V8 I'm still sure they'll be fine for 4banger duty.

get the birf's smurfed, and ull have no troubles.. most people ive seen run 37's -38's on em with out having probs, one truck I know of is 5000 pounds runnin a 351W and 140:1 gearing, I dont think hes busted one.. on 37's
