Locker for winter...
« on: November 19, 2004, 05:35:47 AM »
I've been told just too many things about lockers

my friend w/ a YJ has a eatons in his rear end (heh heh) and just with 31's on the stock suspension that vehicle can get alot of places where a vehical just shouldn't

however... my tracker is a daily driver
I still want streetability, while just runnning 235/75's
I hear a locker is good for winter conditions
where if the road is icy, it is a much more stable straight path

I understand not to giver gas while cornering, espeically on ice, however my car is a 5 speed, and sometimes I use the gears to slow myself down...
is that going to be a problem

and anothre question was... with a tracker are they heavy enough to acctuality unlock on ice?

wrong! A locker is bad for icy conditions. It will cause both wheels to slip and send you into a slide. A Ltd slip is better for icy conditions that a locker. the best set-up would be an ARB where you can leave it unlocked for icy street driving then lock it in when you are cruising through 12" of snow on your way to work.

I had a samurai with loc-rites front and rear and in the snow in 2wd it was downright scary over 30 km/hr in 4wd it wasn't as bad but still spooky at speed. A longer wheelbase helps but it is still scary.

I am hoping to put an ARB in the back of my Sidekick if I can afford it.

I know it's not popular for some reason, but I think a locker is better for ANY condition.  If I know the back end is locked, I know if I haul balls into a corner it will break loose.  The key word here is know.  The most important thing for any driver is to know exactly what their vehicle is going to do.  The reason I could keep up with all my V-8 Heep buddies in my Sammy, on logging roads, was because with the rear locked up I could pitch it sideways on every corner.  Granted I should be dead 20 times over for doing with less than 4psi in the tires sometimes, but I'm still here.  As long as you know how your vehicle acts with the locker on ice you'll be fine.  Most of us have 100hp at the most, so I don't think we can get to crazy.  I'd always want the extra traction for take off, especially on ice and snow.  Or, coming out of a corner sideways.  Maybe I just miss desert racing.  My 2 cents.

Exactly! You must drive in a style that conditions allow. And know, or at least have a good idea what your vehicle will do in a given situation. Will it make driving on ice uncontrollable? no. Will it make it like dry pavement? No. Good or Bad? Both. There will be good aspects, and bad. I myself would prefer having a locker, the traction gains outweigh the possible handling quirks.

I have driven toyotas w/ detroits on ice. It handled way better than without IMO. But they are quite a bit heavier, and longer than a 2dr.

My .02! I plan on installing a lockrite in my sami, and won't have any worries about driving it to and from work (30 mi. one way through going through downtown Eugene, Or)

Lockers suck in the winter. It's like riding a quad on ice.
As we moving with the speed of the robot sonic exhaust
Chronic fumes, fuel, gin, and tonic
Half of the world is corrupt and alive
The other half is depressed and they want to die
