Engine & Transmission Removal
« on: November 18, 2004, 08:49:26 AM »
Can the engine and transmission be removed as a unit (still bolted together) through the engine compartment?

Will the trans crossmember have to be removed (that's what I was thinking would be nice to avoid)?  Anything else odd?

I was thinking if I removed the hood and the electric radiator fan (possibly the radiator too) that I might be able to take both the engine & trans out together.  That'd make pulling the head, doing the front crank seal and replacing the trans (or having it rebuilt) much easier.

i think that'd be pretty funny to watch some one try, but i don't see them really doing anything.  its not that bad taking the tans out anyway.

edit:  i took the trans out of mine in only a few hours on the floor with jacks.  and i have no body lift when it comes to that cuz i moved the engine up 3inchs.(sometimes i wish i had never done that)

I think he's just hoping to get the eng/trans out in one unit for working without dealing with a remate with the eng/trans a typical engine-only pull would involve.

Jerry, you also didn't mention if the tranny was an auto or 5 speed.

Sry, I dunno the answer ... GL if you do try!

It's an auto.

I ask because I'm pretty sure that when I pulled the engine (6-cyl, auto) in my '68 Mustang that I pulled the trans with it (seemed easier).  And I know that a lot of car owners pull them both together.

I was thinking the biggest hurdle would be getting the transfer case past the crossmember.  I don't have that good a mental image of the t-case so it might be impossible.

I'd be surprised to find out that no one here has tried it, unless they know for sure that it can't be done.

The cross member is 4 bolts,
just drop it and pull the whole thing

Remove the radiator/grill and stuff,
remove the top "core support" with
8 or 10 bolts (10mm) 6 on top and several
in the front by the lights

The rest should be easy to do

I agree with stu that if you're just removing the trans, just drop the crossmember and pull out the trans. It really isn't that hard, even without a body lift.
