« on: October 21, 2007, 10:28:11 PM »
my question is- will the head off of a 1.6L 8v tbi fit directly on the 1.3L sammy? or is it even possible... thanks for the help

It fits. Not sure what effect it would have on the compression ratio though. Also the TBI has no mechanical fuel pump set up.

wouldnt that drop the compression ratio?

I don't know for sure what the volume of the 1.6 head vs the 1.3 head, But I do know that the bores between the two are within a few thousandths of each other.  The 1.6 just has a longer stroke.

Difficult to say without measuring it. Looking at a piston catalogue the 1298 looks to have flat top pistons whereas the 1.6 has dished pistons. 1.6 is 1mm/40thou larger bore.

There's an article about measuring cylinder head volume in a motor buiding mag this month. Basically they use plexy glass bolted to the underside of the head (valves installed). drill a small hole in the plexy glass and use a metered cyrenge to fill fluid into the head and record. Then measure bore to find the volume of your cylinder BDC & TDC. 325cc ish define the "ish" and you have theoretical compression. Remember depending on the RPM & Induction design a few engines will opperate above that discplacement. But most all situations run about 80%.
My question is what are you looking to gain with this swap? Bigger valves?

Can't you just swap the intakes if you want to pick up the fuel injection?

Thats the usual way to do it. I can't measure my 1.3 for comparison because its been skimmed and I don't know by how much.
BMEP isn't relevant as we only need to compare heads.

The combustion chamber volume of both heads are the same 32.2cc according to Suzuki. Nobody has ever proved otherwise so far although like many things on the internet some people keep saying there's a difference although they have have not checked it for themselves. There are differences in the valve sizes though with the 1.6 being larger, in particular the exhaust valve and inside the ports but this has no effect on bolting one on in place of the other..

so with the bigger valves, would that theoretically give me a little more bang for the buck? maybe a lil more pep, or even a little umph? thats what i am lookin for, a little more pep in the ol sammy, but cheap for now!

Theoretically it could work but the ports are a fair bit bigger. When I fitted the 1.3 carb to the 1.6 I opened out the inlets on the manifold to match. The exhaust fitted straight up and matched very well. The 1.6 has slightly more duration on the cam as well so that should help a little bit. Having said that the 1.3 head seems to have plenty of flow capability, with a bigger carb and a header it can make a lot more power so its not restictive in stock form. If I had the bits lying around and I hadn't already fitted a 1.6 then I might be inclined to try fitting the bigger exhaust valves in the 1.3 head with the 1.6 cam and a mild skim. I'd just give the ports and manifold a bit of a clean up and smooth out the lumpy bits.

1.6L head on a 1.3L 1298cc EFI, with 1.6 runner, TBI spacer, hybrid 1.3/1.6 TBI, mid-range Sammy cam and a port-matched header.

I run this and it's a friggin' screamer.
