Chevrolet Acknowledges Front Crossmember Problems!!!
« on: October 29, 2007, 03:26:29 PM »
You won't believe this, but today in the mail I received a letter from GM acknowledging the front cross member of 1999-2004 Chevy Trackers "did not receive  adequate corrosion protection".

What they have done:  (quote) General Mortors is providing you (me) with this special coverage for corrsoion failures of the front cross member.  If this condition occurs on your 2000 Chevrolet Tracker (this is for my 2000 Tracker I had... named Roid) within 10 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service, or 150,000 miles, which ever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge [b(their bold, NOT mine.)b]

It also states; "if you have paid to hacve this condition corrected prior to this notification, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement.

So ther ya go.  Maybe the complaints from this forum's members paid off!  Now I can expect to receive one for Scout (my first 2002 Tracker) and for Buster, my current 2002 Tracker as well.
I'm going to make copies of this and forward this info to the new owner of roid (my son-in-law).

Thought some of you guys would like to hear this news.

When I was doing the swap I didn't notice any corrosion whatsoever on the crossmember (or anything else), but I wasn't actually looking for it, either.  Does it happen from the inside out, or am I probably okay if nothing's jumping out at me with a cursory inspection?

Don't know who you folks were talking to at GM but when I called this morning the person I spoke to at 1-800-GMDRIVE knew absolutely nothing about the issue and could find no reference to bulletin SC 06186 - the number I was given by Transport Canada (TC) - who seemed to know a whole lot about the problem.

The GM person did indicate that she would make a note of my concerns on the vehicle file.

This bulletin (according to TC) evidently is only for the Northern states, the Maritimes, Ouebec and I can't remember if TC said Ontario.  As I live in western Canada - Vancouver area, there is no coverage, no free inspection at the dealer - nothing.

So I went and did my own inspection and there is no problem.  Poked and prodded for about 10 min. All the drain holes (5) were clear and any corrosion was surface rust.  Vehicle (2000 Tracker 4dr.) has 161,000km on it.

I guess they only issued it for the States like you said.  I don't believe that my letter stated what locations the recall was good for.  My wifes '01 XL-7 is in mint ocndition.  The one on my '00 Tracker turned to rust.  Dave ;)

Wonder what ASMC is saying about this?  Most GVs and XL7s are rusted out (mine too).

The key words I recall (don't have the document in front of me now) was Tracker owners who live in areas prone to heavy use of salt on the roadways.

Pittracker you mentioned five drain holes... where are they located on the crossmember?  I'm damned near blind with my near vision now, and didn't notice any drain holes on the two crossmembers of the two 2002 Trackers I coated with Herculiner.   I wore goggles to keep the stuff out of my eyes when i applied the Herculiner and they don't facilitate wearing my "reading glasses" very well.  For all I know, I m,ay have plugged up these drain holes with the Herculiner!

5 holes on the bottom, big one in the center (about 3/8") 2 outboard front and 2 rear (about 1/4"), again on the bottom.  I checked the tracker shop manual as well as the SQ 420 manual and neither have a picture.   I got a pic from Rock Auto but it is a top down pic.  It's dark and starting to rain now so I will crawl under tomorrow and see if I can get a good pic.  Stay tuned.

Here is a pic of the right side (looking from the front) of the crossmember showing 2 drain holes on the right and center drain hole.  Left side is similar - camera died before I could get a wider pic showing all 5 holes.  Is this what everyone else has?

That looks like the one I have.  I tried to post pictures but they are too big and I have to figure out how to downsize them.  Yours looks better than mine did.  The real trouble area is the shackles that are welded on for the lower controll arms, that's where the rust hits these the worst.  I will try later to post pics.  Dave

Good picture of the larger drain hole.  Thank you.  If that puppy has two vent holes that size, there is no way I covered them up with herculiner.  They should be good to go, but I'm thinking i ought to squirt some oil based fluid up there to reduce/prevent rust from from starting or continuing.  I guess.

That center hole is a good 5/8" not 3/8" like I said before.  The other holes are about 1/4".  Seems to me the key is keeping the holes clear and unplugged so that water runs out.  I suspect that is a challenge in cold climates where sand and salt get packed in.  If I lived in those climates I would be opening up the smaller holes to say 3/8" to help the crud get out - especially the two at the rear which are the lowest.  I would be curious to see the factory replacements.  Wonder if they did anything to improve drainage?

Got my letter about tthe same time as everyone else.  Living in a VERY dry climate didn't think I had much to worry about.  I actually bought the 'Track in Iowa.  All looked well.  I got my front skid from Sean at Aftermarket4x4 today, and when I began removing one of my frame bolts for the install, rust started sprinkling down.  Definitely from the inside out.  Bolted the skid up anyway (I'll let the dealer uninstall and re-install to inspect it >:D).

So, the moral of the story: Try removing a frame bolt or two (the second one I backed out wasn't bad) even if it looks okay.  It would suck to assume you're fine now and have the front of your TrackVit fold in half on you later.  17mm socket.  Your 8 bolts are arranged like this   :  :  :  : head facing down.  I had the front middle two removed.  Just FYI.

ROGER!  Thanks for the tip Blacktrack99.  I'd be s-o-o-o P.O.ed if my frame cross-member looked good on the outside then collapsed like an egg shell while I was driving on the interstate.   Course, I'd be even MORE P.O.ed if it caused me to wreck and I died in said wreck and then wouldn't be able to flame on G.M. about it for causing the accident.   O.K.  I'm done spewing now.   I think you guys get the point of where I'm going with all this.  I'd be P.O.ed.
