ARB rear locker??
« on: October 30, 2007, 09:28:53 AM »
i want to put a locker in the rear, but i want to be able to disengage it, so i thought an ARB air locker would be the best choice. I dont know much about ARB lockers though, are they dependable, how much is the whole unit: locker, compressor? I also want a locker in the front of my 88 sammy, any recomendations?

I have an ARB in my rear and it works great, very nice since 75% of my driving is on road. So I still have the nice characteristics of an open diff while in town. Your looking at about $900-1000 for locker and compressor. The one compressor is good for both lockers if you decide to do a front later. I would upgrade your rear axles to Calminis so you don't have issues with breakage there. Another $320 for those, mines a Sidekick but I assume they make them for the Sammy too. What I have read by alot of folks is that your ARB's reliability is mostly affected by a proper install, so get someone with lots of experience to put it in for you. Cheers

Install is everything so get somebody who knows how to do it properly. The new "large" compressor is much better than the old model with upgraded wiring and relocatable filter and will air up your rubber much faster at the end of the day too. If you don't need that facility then the new "small" compressor is fine but you can't use it for airing up. I would also consider the Heavy Duty line kit for the rear diff if you drive in areas with lots of branches on the ground.

For the Sammy ARB up front and a mini spool in the back if it's not a daily driver.

Is it a samurai or sidekick you're looking at getting one for?

I think its for a sammy, since he says he wants a locker for the front of one as well. I also have the large compressor with the inflator kit for it, already came in handy when I ran over a nail in town, aired the tire back up and it lasted long enough to get to a repair shop.
