tranny swap

i bought a 1990 sidekick 4x4 with a bad automatic transmission, cost too much to have it rebuilt $800--1300. found a supplier with a used 1 from japan out of a 1.6 16v. is there a way to install this tranny in the sidekick without having to buy an ECM? the 3 sp that came out of it has a modulator and the newer 4 sp appears to be electronic controlled. I also have a 1988 and 1987 samurai both 5 speed. The 87 has a weak motor, how hard willl it be to put the tranny from it in the sidekick?

I can't help with the auto stuff but the Samurai tranny won't swap easily with the Sidekick tranny. The lower bolts holes don't line up, the upper bolt holes would need drilling out. The Sammy flywheel and clutch would be needed and the killer - the Sidekick has an integrated tcase, the Sammy one is divorced.

From what i hear, you will need the different computer if you change from a 3 to 4 speed tranny.

Post up a wanted ad in the for sale section that you need a good used auto tranny, and you could probably get one for $200 or less plus shipping.

You might be able to bolt up a 5-speed sidekick tranny behind it, but you'd need the flywheel and clutch and all that. 

It would just be best to replace it with the same thing.

Thanks for the info. the tranny out of japan was a good deal $250 plus shipping and it had the transfer case attached and all his stuff has less than 50,000 miles/3 mo. warranty and he is in Houston so shipping was only $100.

Samuraiguy sells a powerglide conversion which looks pretty cool. I am not sure I would go with the 3000 stall converter but the trans swap looks cool. http://www.samuraiguy.com/PowerGlideAdapter.htm
