Sounds like some of the bearings are worn and starting to make noise.

It depends....are you talking samurai or trackick tranny?  In my experience, samurai trannys will run quite a while with noisy bearings, but trackick trannys will go downhill fast, once the bearings start howling.

It isn't bad to rebuild (I have only rebuilt a trackick one, but they are both basically the same procedure).  A bearing puller is needed, to pull some of the components.  And the best advice I can give.....pay very close attention to how the parts are assembled and in what orientation they come off of the shaft....some parts look like they can be put on either way, but if you look closely, there are some subtle differences in them.

and rebuild the one you have at your leisure. It's hard to know for sure how good a good used tranny is until you drop it in. I picked up 2 "good used trannys" I ended up rebuilding those 2 + the one I originally had. Now I have 2 good trannys left and sold 1. All for a sumurai (sorry) They aren't too bad to rebuild, just kind of messy. Shop press also helps. Hopefully your needle bearings are still good.
