Just picked up an '87 Samarai from a swap meet. Its spring over with around 2.5" lift blocks. 32x11.5x15 Mud terrains. Engine rebuilt around 7000 miles ago, by owner who is a mechanic has an edelbrock carb and some other mods inside the engine. Came with some extras like axles front and rear from toyota along with leafs, shock mounts and a xfer case. Not sure exactly what the donor vehicle was except its a toyota. Diffs are open. Rattle canned charcoal black. Thats about it. Needs some re-wiring and tlc other wise looks to be a good wheeler. Oh and the current xfer case is a 6 to 1 so the puppy crawls. This is my first sammy so be nice and any helpful remarks or info is welcome. Thanks!

No pics yet. I don't have a digital camera. Oh and I picked it up for $900, I figured that was a decent deal?

Decent deal?..... Are you kidding me?
Some guys can just fall into the sh** and smell like a rose! Thats a great deal! Wish I had that kinda luck  :( insert mumbling here <  .......  >  ;D Welcome to the board

Thanks! Well I've been looking for another explorer but haven't found a decent deal. This was just by chance, he wanted $1200 but after a few beers I had him down to $900 with all the extra parts. I have modified explorer now but this will be a great toy to play with. The thing is so tiny its like a tonka toy!

What do you guys run for lockers?

I think the usual lockers can be seperated into 4 major ones:

ARB air locker

Lock-Rite

Spool

or Welded (Lincoln Locker)

:)

I think there's more.. like a Detroit Gearless or something too.

I run a Lock-Rite in the Kick.

Anyone else running lockers and what are you running.

In my Explorer I run an ARB up front and Detroit in the rear.

 i'm running spool in the rear and loc rite up front.(if i did it again i'd go loc rite in rear also,spool eats the tires.) :-[

Thanks for the info Oscar. So it seems the Loc rites are popular I guess its safe to assume they dont have a lot of problems. Is the loc rite selectable or full time or LS?

Ok I'm back with a little more work completed. I pulled the dash out and got everything working but the reverse lights which I pretty sure is the sender. And the hazards which is the switch and I'm not going to bother fixing it.

Also bought some doors (the doors I had, nothing worked) and decent seats for $200 from a pick and pull.

Seeing how I have everything out of the cab and the dash off I was thinking I could pull the body off to easier access to the drive train components. I have Toyota axles I was thinking of throwing in.

So my questions are:

Should I just get her ready for the trails and wait till I break something?

Or do I swap in the Toyota axles?

Is the body easy to remove?

Do you think it would be worth the effort to remove the body to swap axles?

Also he never installed the front drive shaft, he said the angle was to bad. Any thoughts on that. I haven't actually tried connecting it but the angle is pretty steep.

Wait till you break somthing, that
is if you could get the front shaft
back in, rotate the front axle and
re align the caster so the steering
wheel will return to straight and
then get a custom front shaft with
double U-joints on the T-case end
