transfer case noise
« on: November 13, 2004, 05:10:30 PM »
Hey, just wondering if anyone has had this or could give me an idea where to start? 92 tracker 2" coil lift, 4" body lift, auto hubs running 32's. When I put it into 4WD there is a low pitched whining noise that seems to come from the trans. area(5-speed). It increases and decreases with vehicle speed. When I shift back into 2WD it's gone. Do you think its a bearing in the T-case?
Thanks!

I'd begin with checking / changing the fluids.  Otherwise I haven't heard a kick whine yet.

On a sammy I'd also try putting the T-case in Nutral and shift thru the gears to listen to the Tranny bearings.  I have not tried this on a Kick yet.

Does it happen mostly with 4WD LOW or just 4WD high?

I know my Tcase whines in 4 LOW and that's normal.

I can hear my T-case with the hubs
locked in 2WD, it's not loud, but I
can hear it

I don't think this is normal, but I'm not sure. Tried shifting thru the gears with the T-ccase in neutral, no noise. I put it in 4WD today on a mud road and I noticed it was still making the noise as I coasted up to the stop sighn with the clutch pushed in. I kinda wonder if its not coming from the front somwhere?

I have the same problem when I m on 2WD.No problem at 4WD.I can hear a sound like the one described.I think it comes from somewhere on the passenger's side, but I m sure it looks like coming from transmission. It becomes louder when I change to longer gear, from example from 2nd to 3rd and 4th.It seems to do this when the engine doesnt have much torque(for example 3rd and 2000 rpm+pushing the throttle) ,I know that if I use longer gear at low RPM a noise like that sounds, but its much more intense.Something like "GZZZZZZZZ".
It sounds like gears rotating.I dont think its normal either.I thought that maybe due to body lift and the fact that the shifter's rubber boot is open a bit (I can see the road) ,the transmission noise seems to be louder, but I dont know....
The truck has its services more often than required.
