Transmission gave up the ghost
« on: November 16, 2007, 12:23:16 AM »
So here it goes, I was driving home from my work, and I come up to a stop light. It turns green and put it in first and go, works fine. So then I push in the clutch and put it in second, and when I let out the clutch, it sounds like it popped into neutral, making grinding noises and having very momentary forward movement before it started to roll backwards. I tried putting it in 4wd, 4low and other gears, but to no avail. After I did that, the clutch pedal felt as if the input shaft had completely snapped off and it started smelling like burning clutch.I ended up having to call my aunt and have a tow truck bring it to my house. So now my only car(the tracker) has a bad transmission (I know it is not the clutch), and I dont have anything else to drive to college for the remaining 4 weeks of the semester. Getting to work is no problem as it is in town, but the college I go to is 20 miles one way.

??? ??? If the clutch was smelling, I would think the transmission was turning and the clutch was slipping. Maybe part of the components related to the clutch broke. something similar happened to me with a 76 Celica. I drove it so long that it broke. Never wore out, just broke. Rusted.  Did you pull the transmission yet?  Start there.  Assuming you have the time.

I just replaced the clutch 6 months ago. I don't drive it hard enough to burn up a clutch that fast. The clutch worked fine up until the transmission let go. I know the clutch was working because when they burn out, they go very gradually untill it does nothing but slips. Either way, I have to look for another vehicle. It looks like for now I am stuck to bumming rides, riding the bus, and the skateboard to get where I need to be >:(.

I'm not so sure that it is the trans. The part of your description where the pedal did not have any feel makes me think you may have had a part break in the clutch. There are more ways that a clutch can give up other than wearing out. Also I would think that if the trans shelled out then you could verify by lifting a back wheel and turning it. I'd think it would make noise no matter what end was turning.

If you had the clutch installed 6 months ago and if it is the problem, maybe there is some warranty involved.

Good luck!

I replaced the clutch myself, and made sure I did it right. Earlier today I went outside and took a look at the transmission, and it doesnt appear to be leaking anything, so it must be all internal damage. I would like to pull the transmission and take it apart, but I am not in a good position to be doing that right now, and it would be harder to sell if I took it apart. My dad is helping me find another car right now, so hopefully it wont be too long before I have another car.

I'd bet money that something related to the clutch release fork has failed - possibly the fork itself or the pivot point. If the transmission had grenaded you are usually able to get in one gear and not others. For example - someone I know does truck pulls with his truck and blew 1st in his transmission. All gears associated in the neighborhood of 1st (reverse in this case) were gone as well. He still could grab some of the other gears and limp it back to the pits.

For the most part, manual transmissions are tough and can handle a lot without failure. Unless you've been fogging with NOx, the Zuki engine are unlikely to be able to produce torque to snap an input shaft.

I'd make time to pull the transmission/transfer case before just buying another car. It would make me sick to spend $4,500 (arbitrary number - what I paid for my Tracker  :) ) on another car because a $50 part failed.

Just my $.02 worth.

The transmission has been making bearing noise for a while now, so if the clutch did go, I would still have to replace the transmission as the bearings are bad and there is a bunch of metal shavings in the transmission oil. There is also a bunch of other things wrong with it, like the front wheel bearings, the cv joints, engine burns oil, etc. It would make a great off roader/rock crawler project, but I need a daily driver, that I can lock my camera gear in and can do highway speeds for long periods of time, and I can park it somewhere and not worry about it getting broken into as easily.

It very well could be the clutch. I went outside earlier today and took off the flywheel inspection cover jacked up one of the rear wheels off the ground. The wheel would turn about 1/2 a rotation and then it would lock up, all the while the noise coming from the transmission was a grinding sound(this was while it was in 1st gear). I then started up the engine with the clutch pedal in, and then I heard this pop noise, so I turned it off right away. I looked underneath it to find a few pieces of clutch material, a few rivet heads, and a piece of spring steel from the clutch that was ripped in half.

You might have got a bad clutch disc when you replaced it. I was told to always visually inspect the disc before paying for it. The last clutch I replaced (Plymouth Horizion), I refused three discs in a row because the springs inside the disc hub were already loose in the hub. I went up a price level and found hubs with tight springs.

You never can tell these days....

It very well could have been a bad clutch disk. When I needed to replace it, I only had the weekend to work on it, so my dad went out and got a cheap clutch for it(it wasnt worth spending $300-400 on a centerforce clutch, and I had a major lack of time to get the clutch and change it). I was talking to my dad today, and he said that the transmission could have jammed up causing the clutch to fail as a result, because the clutch pedal and clutch didnt feel like it wasnt working until after the transmission had made the horrible grinding noise and wouldnt move anymore. The clutch started to smell like it was burning after I tried to make it move out of the street(It would move an inch forward and then it rolled backward and wouldnt go anymore). Either way, I am sure I will find out what went wrong with it, as I am selling it to someone I know, so I will ask him when he gets it apart.
