A metal grille should be the last reason to buy your first car, lol.  Like said above, look for rust, any oil, fluid leaks.  Make sure you test drive it.  Check for clutch slippage.  Take a look underneath to see for any hidden rust.  And make sure he has the title and its clean.  Also if the mileage is very low, it may be false.  Look for a clean engine compartment and worn pedal pads...they can be a good reference to see if its the actual mileage reading.  Do a carfax check too if possible.

Are you sure its not a plastic one thats painted? Only metal ones that I know of are the early SJ410 grills and its not one of those.
Looks like it could be SPOA if so ask about steering linkages, Z-bar or Hi-steer. Any kind of anti-wrap linkage at the back? Who made the perches?
Find out what mods its got and then search the forum to find out how good they are likely to be.

That should have the 1.3L EFI engine in it, probably why he wants so much.  You don't see to many early 90 Sammys....

Uuhhhhh....  Why green ??? comes to mind.

That looks like an early 90's Sammy which may be part of the reason for the high price, not too many of those around.

He says it is an 88 which would make it a carbed 1.3. The only mod looks to be a shackle lift and a little larger tires. I am not sure this is worth 4,000 though. The body does look to be in fairly good condition but like it says it has seen salt and has some rust. In Fresno California you should be able to find something without rust. Others here could probably give you a better estimate of what it is worth but I would guess about 3,000 mostly because of the low mileage.

I got him down to 3500$ (all my 16 yr old self has)
but i found out it doesnt pass smog because he took out the warm air actuator valve and the warm air actuator, and he says he has the part and will include it at the sale.

does anyone know how hard it is to intstall the part, (he says it is just some housing.) and if it is hard, how much does it cost to have it installed.

also how much does it cost to get it smogged??

Ben, Look, for what it is worth this might not be the truck for you. I am sure that 3500 is more than it is worth, and it will not even pass emissions. You are going to give him all your money and then you have to fix it? Tell him that you will buy it for 3500 if he fixes it so it will pass emissions. Even then the rust bothers me. you live in California, it should not be hard to find one without rust that will pass emissions for around the same money.

The last thing is the shackle lift. the first thing you will need to do if you want to have a serious off road vehicle is take the shackles off and replace them with a real lift. Again more money gone from you pocket before you start.
