« on: November 19, 2007, 06:10:11 PM »
k so
my samurai i bought off a friend awile back was running great
then i had to go to my parents which is 5 hours away
and my car is in the shop, so i had to drive there with the Sam.
got there
everything was fine
then later that nite i was turning into a parking lot and out of nowere i started to hear this crunching noise
and everything was bouncing around.
my buddy got out and looked wile i drove really slow
and he saw that my driveshaft or w/e it is was loose
so we got some tools, and sure enough, the bolts on the bottom end were loose
tightended them back up,
still did the same thing.
Basically i can move the driveshaft around abit, its not tight like the front one
i have no idea how to tighten it
help?

please someone help?
i need to sell this ASAP and noone will buy it when it doenst move.

Sounds like the pinion bearing blew.

If you have a salvage yard nearby with a Samurai in it, you can buy a differential third member for somewhere between 20 and 40 bucks.

pop the axles, slap the used third in, fill up the pumpkin with 75-90 gear lube and you are back up and running.

Find documents on how to do the swap by doing a search for rear axle at ack's FAQ (the link is in my signature, below).

Of course, this assumes that your broken differential has the OEM 3.73 -1 ring and pinion set in it...

well I just 100 for my 3rd so you might pay a little more than that!.

gear it locked up or broken, just remember when you buy a new 3rd member that they have to match you old one, as far as the gears, meaning what you take out is what you put in... also match the front one.

stock is 3.73
here are 2 pics of a stock one and one that is 5.12. chewed up one is a 5.12 and other one is stock but for the front also...
see how the 5.12 is fatter and different # of teeth on the gears.

well the 3rd inside looked like this 5.12

it should have looked more like this
3.73
