Worth it??

I just found a Tracker 4 sale for 500 bucks..it is 2wd and leaks lots of oil from the oil pan..I need 4wd and the leak i could fix easily..it has 130,000 miles on it.  I would want to convert it to 4wd...my only question on that is are the mount points for the front diff there on the 2wd frame??  The guy said there is NO frame or body rust and was painted last year.  WOULD YOU BUY IT?? I need some 2nd opinions if i should get it or not.

I'd say it would be a great parts rig.

Downsides ...
1) I hate repainted rigs ... why the repaint? accident? rust repair? ...
2) 2wd means you'll have to source parts to add the front drivetrain (doabale, but ...)

Upsides...
1) Low mileage motor
2) good price

If it was me, I'd buy it, and find a 4wd with a bad motor.

As I understand it the mounting points for the front axle are not there, and of course no transfer case. I am not sure it would be worth trying to do a 4WD conversion but it might be a good candidate for a four link toy axle install.

Yes, all the mounting points are there for the 4x4 conversion. It's not too bad if you have a donner truck or you go to the pick-a-part and get everything your self. I helped my brother a little on a 2 to 4x4 conv.

The driver's side front diff mount is missing from the frame, but all the other mounts are there for the conversion. Cut the mount you need from a junker's frame and weld it into the 2wd to have all the mounts needed. Other parts needed would include the complete diff assembly(match up the r&p to what you already have in the rear to make life easier), both front CV shafts, front locking hubs, transfer case(you might be lucky and the 2wd has the dummy transfercase behind the 4wd style tranny, then the transfercase will bolt right up, but if it has the pure 2wd tranny without the dummy case, you'll probably need the tranny, too.) and front driveshaft.

I would do it, but I also have enough parts rigs and spare parts laying around to do the conversion without having to add much to what I already have....

Ok let me ask something...I am very mechanically inclined seeing as i am a mechanic...so if i had all the parts in front of me that i needed to do the swap...how many working hours (average) do you think it would take to the entire 4wd swap??

i did mine by myself in about 4-5 hours including pulling the motor to make it easier to weld to the driverside frame rail for the diff mount

From start to finish, you should be able to get it all in there within a day.

$500 isn't bad, but I can't stand repainted cars either.  I'd rather them be all scratched up like mine, but still original paint.

Can someone describe what is going to be welded??  I don't weld so I'd have to get someone to do it for me

That's right! My bad I forgot about that one. My brother is a good welder and he made such quick work of it I had forgotten.

The driver's side diff bracket on the frame kinda looks like a leaf spring hanger(the end opposite the shackle) it's on the left frame rail on the inside, pointing towards the middle of the engine compartment.
