My Napa U-Joint blew up!

O.k. so I was going about 75 in my samurai on a slight incline testing out my new harley carb and kabang!!! :o :o :o I thought I was driving on the shoulder where they put those cuts to wake you up. There was no warning, no vibration, just kabang!!! :o :o  I nursed it home and found the back u-joint on the intermediate drive shaft lost it's innards on one of the ends. Minimal  damage to the yoke. Just a little nick or two so I filed them smooth and put on a japan one I got from J.D outfitters (I think that's their name). Hopefully I'll have better luck with it.

It's good to have spare parts around! 8) ;)

how do u like your new harley carb? what did it cost for the intake mods? if any, and what kinda carb did u get? $$$$ wise? where from? etc.....   i'm very interested, and heard alot of people are doing this now. info plssss...   thanks

A guy in our club only uses the JDM direct replacement U-Joints after getting tired of blowing up the standard replacement ones once a year.  :P

Hell No! >:D >:D 75 m.p.h. and it still had more. I went 70 with the stocker but it took more to get there and it wouldn't hold it on  an incline. Now I'm afraid to go too fast for too long now. Maybe I better pickup some spare driveshafts for just such an emergency. I hope the u-joint I got from J.D.Outfiitters will hold up better. ??? :P.

Use OEM Koyo joints.  Nothing better IMHO.  Also, Dana makes a solid u-joint, but I have no experience with them.

Any of the "greasable" joints aren't worth the box they come in.

The one I had laying around is a G.M.B. made in japan. I had to put something on it. Anyone else try these G.M.B. u-joints?

On a side note, how can something as critical as a u-joint be sold without having to meet some kind of safety or performance standards? ??? ???

Ya wanna play ya gatta pay,  you buy cheap ya get cheap.    I run the mitsubishi joints from trail tough, matsuba uj-625 I think around twenty bucks ea. still trying to break one. stock are around fifty two bucks ea.

Only problem is I think this u-joint was around $20.00. It's Japan made and I thought I was getting a good one but who knows. Maybe just in case, I'll grab some from trail tough. I don't want to break another. It's kind of hard on the yoke not to mention the transmission and transfer case.

FWIW, again, Suzuki Genuine Parts KOYO u-joints seem indestrucable.  I can get them from the dealer for under $40, with a dealer discount.  If you talk Zook to the parts manager and how you use (read: break) parts wheeling, most will give you the shop discount, which is usually 25%, which goes a long way at making SGP affordable.

I've seem quite a few joints blow, both greaseable and non, but honestly the only thing I've ever seen blow a KOYO is uncontrolled axle wrap.
