Help with stock tach install

Hi, New to the forum but not new to sammy's. this is the second one I have had, they are both 87's. I took the whole instrument cluster out of my old 87 and put it in the new tin top Im building. The plugs seemed the same I went through both harnesses and all the colors matched, when I plug it in in the new one everything works except the tach! Do I have to hook up another wire? this sammy has a weber on it and some wiring removed under the hood could this be part of the problem? and help would be appreciated. thanks

When I put a tach into my '85 Toyota, I discovered the necessary wire was left out of the harness.  Guess they figured it saved $.02 in the manufacturing process.  I had to route my own wire.  I would check to see if the Sammy harness has a wire for every wire in the new harness.  If not, I would say Suzuki decided to save that $.02.  Otherwise, the removed wiring under the hood might be your problem.  Good luck.

The new cluster will be plug and play.  The wiring harnesses for tach and non-tach 87 samurais are the same.  You either have a bad/missing wire or the tach is bad.  IIRC, the tach signal is a brown wire.

you said the tach wire is brown. does the tach wire go to the coil for a signal? If so, I have checked all wires from the gauge plugs to both the neg and pos coil lead(I thought the tach worked off the + on the coil) Is this right? should I just run a new wire from the (pos or neg? ???) on the coil to the brown on the gauge plug?   thanks ;D

I believe the wire is brown, and I believe it goes to the coil (it is, and does, on my EFI samurai anyway).  I think it works off the neg. side of the coil.
You could run a new wire, but I would check the existing wire for continuity (with the engine off and the negative terminal of the battery unhooked), also check to see that all the connections on the tach wire are clean and secure.

I have the factory wiring diagram for the 87 Sammi!!! The wire is brown with white stripe and go on the negative side of the coil...

yes I have checked it for continuity and there is none. I guess Ill just run a new wire and see what happens. thanks, Ill post back my results
