Spring help!
« on: December 17, 2007, 07:57:20 PM »
Hey guys!

I have an 86 soft top. With a spring over and 31" tires I wouls like to lift it up some more so i can but on bigger tires . 31/13.50/15 or 33/12.5/15  My springs are bone flat!!! no arc at all. I was thinking of getting them re-arc and mabey putting in an extra leaf. I also thought about the Trail tought bone eyes. I was also thinking shackles?? But was not sure if i should or not? what about the ones that open up? Or maybe a shackle reversal kit? i dont want to go crazy high but enough so i can get some good flex! Please any help would be great..

Tom

Springs are the best way to go,as they allow the best flex, and not just more height like shackles.I would not run anything bigger than a 31x10.50.They sap power and put way to much stress on everything.

A fellow club member just did the YJ spring conversion, it looks really nice.  Plenty of room to clear the 33x12.50 Swampers he put underneath it.  Hasn't gotten the rig back on the road yet... but looks really nice.  :D

You can see the conversion in the Gear Guide section here:  http://www.zukiworld.com/month_050104/feature_trailtough_questreview.htm

With a standar SPOA you should be able to fit 31" tires no problem.

I put in two second springs in my spring pack to give the kit a bit more lift without affecting the ride to much.  That worked fine for a few years, then did a RUF (Rear Springs Up Front) conversion in order to slide the axle forward a few inches and soften up the ride.  Recently I hacked up the front fenders to get rid of the last of the rubbing.  Currently my springs sit with just a little bit of arch, most of the clearance comes from cutting up the fenders front and rear.  I just like keeping the rig around 6" of lift.

I have 31" on with my spring over. But they tend to rub some flexing! I was thinking of the re-arc or new springs cause mine are flat no arc at all! Do most guys run 31's can a guy get away with running 33's im not hard on my rig at all just wanted a little bigger! I like the mud and trail riding!  We dont have much rock and such in BC canada!

I would re-arch before buying new springs.  When we re-arched the drivers side a pipe bender was used.  The spring pack was dismantled, then pressure put on the spring with the bender.  Tapped it with a mini-sledge along the arch to help it bend a bit.  Then put in the next spring and repeated.  It's worked so far, but probably won't hold up as long as a professional job.

The main problem I had with a standard SPOA was the tires rubbing on the back of the fender with 33x12.5 tires and 3.5" of backspacing.  A bit of time with a hammer fixed that problem.   ;D

One thing to be careful of is most people start breaking things once you reach the 33" tire range.  It depends on your driving style and how much traction your tires grab.  With the Chromoly shafts now available you can just upgrade your axle with a plug and play part, but they are 500+.

Depending on where you are at someone with a pair of 33" tires might be close by and willing to let you try them out.  :)

Thanks for the ideas! I was thinking now of the wrangler spring swap! do many guys run them? how are they? Im still thinking of just re arcing mine. But if i could get moreflex and more lift i just thought that might be an easy way to go? Any advice is always nice!!
