lil Suzy under the weather,

lil Suzy under the weather,

I went to start her yesterday and she sputtered a few times and died. She only cranked after that, I pulled the plugs and they were gas soaked. I checked for spark and that is good. I think the TBI is dumping to much gas. Is this a known issue and if so what is the fix. Oh, lil Suzy is a 1989 Sidekick 1.6 TBI

Sounds like an ECM issue. Don't quote me on that cause it could be the wires are rotted off the fuel pump. Take the gas cap off and have a buddy turn the key... Now listen for the fuel pump. If it does not wirrrr away like it's supposed to then I would suspect one of the two reason I gave above.

Wouldn't the plugs being gas soaked mean he's got fuel? How about the air filter? is it dirty or clogged? Tailpipe free of obstructions?

Gas + air + spark = oughtta run.  Badly, perhaps, but it should fire.

My guess is water in the tank.  You've got the classic symptoms.  Reminds me of this one time my sister left her gas cap at the pump, so "borrowed" the one off my 2nd car.  "Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that..."  Worse, by the time I got around to figuring out why it wouldn't start, it was winter and the freezing "gas" wiped out my fuel pump.  By the time I got around to fixing that, the motor had rusted seized.  Perfectly running --- and totally rare --- X-11.....history....eventually.. 

I've yet to let her live that down.  It'll probably be a death bed thing for me.

Sounds like a short in the wiring or a bad injector driver in the ECM. Take the air pipe off the throttle body and see if the injector is operating continuously. Check the timing too just in case something has slipped.

I've heard of temp sensors going bad, telling the ECM that it's 40 below zero and it fluids out the motor.

Thanks for the ideas, I will check them out as soon as the temp goes up a little here in Colorado. I will post what I find.

Hi, I looked down the throttle body and it does look like fuel is flowing continuously. I don't see a short in the wiring, where should I be looking for this? How can I tell if it is the ECM?

Pull the ecm out and see if it smells bad? if not pull the caps and see if they are leaking, if so replace them.

I pulled the error codes and it flashes once then twice, like this *   **        *   **     etc.  Intuition tells me this would be a code 12 but what does it mean? anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

If it makes a difference lil Suzy is an 89

I wish that was true.

I drove her the day before she quit running. She was running fine came home turned her off and the next day she sputtered when I started her and died. She has not fired since.

I will pull the ECM and check that out.

I pulled the ECM and everything looks ok in there. I did not smell anything or see any visual evidence of failure.

I do not see any evidence of a short in the wiring, the wires going to the throttle body are in good shape no cracking or hardness.

Is it possible that the throttle body itself is leaking? is there a rebuild kit available? How hard is it to install?

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

I was quite worried, this is the first time since I brought her home in 1991 that she did not start when I turned the key. As it turns out it was a mild heart attack brought on by corrosion in the ECM. A little surgery by Dr. Surly, (the ECM doc. who posts at Zuwharrie) and she is feeling much better.

Thank you, to all who helped me diagnose the problem.
