97 sidekick transmission overheats, what to do?
« on: December 29, 2007, 08:29:33 AM »
My 97 sidekicks automatic transmission keep overheating, causing fluid to come out of it somewhere. It wont do it while it idles, no matter how long it idles. Only when the trans gets used by driving around a few minutes. What can I do? Right now im waiting on the filter to come in from autozone to complete a full fluid/filter change. What can I do besides that? Anyone ever have this problem? Thanks in advance

If the tranny is over heating it sounds like you may have a need for a new one. Heat is the number 1 killer of any auto tranny.
It could be that there is blockage in the lines to the tranny cooler in the bottom of the rad. You can pull the lines off the rad and blow air through it to see if it's block.
Your tranny pump might not be pushing enough flow and may need to be replaced.
Is your park brake releasing for sure or any other problems with front brakes dragging or siezed calipers? This can put more load on the transmission and create more heat.
Another thing... Check the trans fluid level when it is cold. If the tranny is overfull it will expand when hot and possibly come out the breather on top of the tranny or the dip stick tube.
I had to change the auto tranny on my 96 because for some reason one of the parts inside decided to eat 8 very small holes in the transmission case. I have never seen a trans do this before myself and it shifted just fine while it leaks all over my catylitic converter and smoked out everyone behind me.
Take a flashlight with you and inspect the case closely...
3spd or 4spd auto?

I have the 4 spd auto. I was hoping not to hear the bad news  :(  Is there a hardcore chemical to flush my lines to ensure they are not clogged? I will try pressurized air to see if i can find a block. Any more tips for me anyone?

If you call your local oil change shop they probably know someone who can flush your transmission.  I have had that fix the shifting on two different automatic transmissions.

What is the temp of the trans when it's "overheated"
I bet you have an overfilled trans, as oil or ATF in this case
does not boil over like water will, it will get dark, smell bad
or burned but not boil over, but an overfilled trans, or if you
used type F fluid instead of DexronIII last time fluid was added
you might be seeing that happen. Type F fluid foams as it runs,
I guess to lube parts up higher in the trans.

When was the last time you added fluid? and was it changed
recently ???
