Another heater question.
« on: December 29, 2007, 08:02:46 PM »
I was reading in one of your older forums and I read that you only get heat through your lower and upper vents and not out of your middle vents(in the dash). Is this true and does anyone know why this is.Thanks

I am not sure. I do not use the dash vent's in the Sammy as the few times I have, I have I ended up with a face full of dust. :P

On the kick I just picked up, it does blow heat from the dash vents.

Help any?  :)

My 86 is like that. If you turn the control for air out the middle ones when your temp control is on heat, you get cold air. I don't know why they do this but I was just looking at one of the heater control units to investigate just that (really, about an hour ago, no kidding). From what I can see, when you turn the temperature knob (the lower left knob) right to up the heat, it also moves the wire that opens and closes the doors on the heat ducts that control where the air is directed. In other words, when you turn the heat up, it redirects or closes the gate that allows hot air out the middle vents. The front part of the knob slides the temp control switch and the back end part has a hole where one of the control wires hooks thru.  Really stupid I think. You could probably alter it to not do this but it would probably be hokey (believe, I was thinking of doing just that too). :-\

You can't get heat out of the dash vents because they are at the top/rear of the fan and the heater core is under the fan.   The defroster gets its hot air from the bottom and the air goes up the 2in. tubes on each side of the fan box.

If you look on E-Bay for a heater box you can see what I am talking about.

You get the cold air because the flap is open.

Is there a valve or cable that I can close so cold air wont come in all the time,so I can take out the rags in the vents.

the flap for the fan is on the top rear on the heater box.  Even with mine closed I still get some air coming out, keep the rags in there.

Try checking under the dash and making sure all the cables are still connected to their proper control levers on both the control side and the heater box side. Maybe a cable broke and is not working anymore? You shouldn't be getting any air out of the center dash vents with the control set on heater or defrost.

And checking the cable ends on the heater box end is easy, just check them from the pass. side, the dash end of the cables will be a little harder.

i have had my hvac hosing compltly apart so i know it wont be easy to get heat out of the dash panels. mine i guess is just an h_housing because i have no ac. the only time air is passing through the heater core is when its not directed towards the dash vents. it blows straight down through the heater core and out the floor vents. when you turn it to dash it by passes the heater core to go through the dash vents. air cannot pass through the heater core and then through the vents. it does have vent tubes that go from the floor vents up to your defrost vents but they wont supply enough air to tie them into the dash vents and defrost.

your fresh air vent cable is brokey or came loose allowing air to flow from outside past the blend door and out the dash.

also the way they designed the housing sets the heatercore at a horozontal angle and air blows down through it. so that means that any cr|removethispart|@p that gets ontop of the heatercore is held there by air flow clogging it up. so if it isnt hot enough thats why. it should cook you out of your zuk. trust me. you may need to pull your dash and pull apart the housing to clean it out. who knows, you might have a pet in there like i did.

check your recerc door. its on the passengers side . its pretty obvious you cant miss it. make sure its pushed open all the way. theres an adjustment you can do with the cable. when its on recirculate it should be all the way open.(so that it sucks air from the inside of the cab)

also check the mode door cable its almost in the same area. its the lever for floor/dash. push it towards hot and watch it. once you see what direction it goes adjust it to go further until it stops coming out the dash.
