235s on my spare tire mount ?
« on: December 30, 2007, 05:27:00 PM »
I have a 1998 Chevy Tracker 4 door 2wd.  I know that 235s will fit on my Tracker from the prevous posts,  but is there any problem with a 235/75-15 fitting on the factory spare tire mount?  I am planning on buying 235s in a few weeks and I want to make sure that I am not going to have a problem.

My spare tire mount has cracked the sheet metal in the tailgate. Since then I have welded it. I attribute it to the 235s as well as push starting with it and who knows what other abuse. They will fit and if you don't tighten it down all the way shouldn't give you any trouble.

I really doubt that the tire weight had anything to do with the crack.  I went to pick and pull and hung and bounced on one just to get a feel for the strength of the mount since it looks flimsy.  It held up to me fine and I weight 360#, still better to test this at pick and pull then my truck, right?   ;)

tire and wheel size had alot to do with it. we've had this happen on
3 differrent sammis.  remember these big tires and wheels weigh alot more
and when they bounce on a rough road it puts a lot of stress on the
sheet metal , hence they crack

I'm not thinking it was the weight of my spare that caused the cracks so much as the pressure pulling against the sheet metal from the tire width differnce. I should try removing the plastic spacers that keep the tire off the paint. Funny to hear about you bouncing on the tire though. I try to dicourage people from sitting on my spare though for that reason. Or using the door frame to support thier weight when exiting the vehicle. I've already welded the mounts once from that as well.
