Factory cruise control info/help needed...
« on: December 31, 2007, 08:40:04 PM »
I picked up some cruise control parts off of a 95, 4 door, auto trackick, and am hoping I can swap/adapt them over to my 92, 4 door, 5 speed trackick (even though it appears that the auto and manual trackicks use different CC units).
I got the multifunction/combination switch assembly off the steering column, the cruise on/off switch in the dash, and the accelerator cable assembly and under hood cruise control box (CC actuator?) that sits over by the windshield washer reservior.
I found I had the pigtail for the CC on/off switch in the dash to plug into....but thats all I found.....no pigtail for the under hood unit, no pigtail for the CC connections in the multifunction switch assembly.  Am I just not looking hard enough or what?  Why would I have one pigtail and not the others?  Are the CC units for 92s different than the ones for 95s?
Oh, and there is a CC module listed on the wiring diagrams.....where is it located exactly....and what does it look like?
Pics of anything would be helpful too........thanks.

Ok I saw this a day or 2 ago, and was too busy to reply.  I have a 95 jlx with the factroy cruise.  I wish It were an aftermarket one.  It forgets what speed your on when u hit the brake. And it wont set past 75, ( like to set it on 80).  It is also very weak, and its cable will come off the unit, especially if you help it and I have to get out and use the the pliers to put it back on.   >:(    I dont know where the cc module is?  ??? Sorry

Ok thanks.  I found it.  It is a silver metal box attached to the right side of the steering column (it is attached to some bracketry of another silver metal box....4 speed auto tranny control box, I think), under the dash.  I found/got it today.  Oh, and even though the wiring diagram shows that the wiring going to the 2 CC modules (auto vs. manual tranny) being quite a bit different.....the auto tranny CC module has every wire in the plug that the manual tranny module has, except for the clutch pedal position wire.....so it appears like an auto tranny CC module/system could be used in a manual tranny trackick with the addition of a clutch pedal position wire.

I got the factory CC setup, because I thought it might be nicer to have.....but it sounds like it may not be.  And it looks like my 92 isn't completely "prewired" for factory CC.....so it may be more of a PITA to add it (a lot of adding and splicing of wires) than what it would be worth.
It currently has an aftermarket CC setup on it, but it has started getting hard to set....once it sets, it works great....maybe I'll just look into why, and leave that one in place.

If your aftermarket CC is an Audiovox, commonly available from Pep Boys, Jc whitney, etc, take a look at the Control switch, the two rockers can get moisture in them. The cover is easy to remove, check for gunk inside. You can get a replacement from Audiovox for $10. The one on my Harley ( yeah, they'll work on just about anything!) got soaked in a rainstorm and started to act like yours, then finally quit. Replacement solved the problem pronto. The one in my Tracker works great, no problems in 2 + years.

It was on it when I got the sidekick.  It is a SCS/Frigette brand.
I have tested the "set" button and associated wiring clear back to the main box and it tests out fine......funny thing is, it worked perfectly when I first got it, now it has developed this quirky behavior.....I'll have to test the other circuits/wires later.
