Coil suspension question?

Coil suspension question?

Anyone have or have seen a coil suspension conversion threw rockyroad? I have a couple questions about it. I realize a samurai is not a highway vechile. I barely do the speedlimit and shake alittle. I was shopping around for lifts and my budget is decent. I have saved a little extra money this year to put into my samurai. Coil suspension is usposed to be the best hands down. But i do travel the highway often. not for work but because its the easiest way to get to the bigger towns or cities for shopping etc. Is the coil suspension any better for highway travel. with a higher lift i plan on wider axels and bigger tires for stability and performance. Also is the rocky road kit well built?

Coil and decent budget rarely go hand in hand.  Especially if you plan on swapping axles at the same time.  :)

If built properly the coil is going to be a smoother ride then the traditional leaf spring setup.  Also, how much taller to you plan on going?  Are you looking to run 33" or 35" tires?  If your tearing into everything you might as well do it all at once.  :)

I would like to do 8 inches and 33s if a larger high is needed i will do a small body lift.  This weekend the tub comes off and its going to my shop. Im fixing any rust and undercoating the underside. new paint in a month roughly depens on free time. I am doing the toyota axels maybe a different rim offset I will see when the body is on and the lift installed. Time is key to goo work but i do work in a autobody shop with acsess to all tools and supplies. since we are switching paint companye soon we get rid of our old paints this means free paint. I amd a painter there so labor and supplies are free. I am also welding certified and have the proper equipment. I was just looking for opions on coil threw rocky road they are a little cheaper than others. my project funding is rouchly 6000. i can do more or less but thats my max goal. I sold a vechile and i have a dd and the samurai so my intentions were to build my sami.

well i never had a coil rig, the deifinate pluses are aproache and departure angles, i would geuss they ride ok on the road , the tjs on up are coil front, i read sombodys report on rocky roads kit and it wasnt good, somthing about no spacers and they included a stack of nuts instead? and also heard som talk about thier yj kit support being bad, i know we arent supose to bash suppliers on here but im givving a honest review, my own expieriance with my t-case from them was so bad its legendary, so take that into acount, im definatly jaded,  im pretty easy going but 6 months with no rig made me cranky, im sure im worse case scenario with this outfit, but well you get the idea

Are you looking for a kit or can you fab yourself? 6000$ is alot. I did a homade coil link suspension , and It seams to work great. I used some really cheap heims (tractor supply) cause it was my first build and I wasnt sure of my abilities , I didnt want to put in alot of money until I knew it would work. I used Q1A 200 14 in the front and I think 175/14's in the rear. All the link mounts and brackets I made. But you can get them from vendors like Blue Torch Fab. I wouldnt buy from RRO thats just my opinion on the last thing I tried to buy from them. Im running 38" swampers, still need gears and new tires

6000 is alot but its just what i have to invest. Most likely i will not use it all. I usually like to buy good name brand products. and i research the products as well. sometimes its just the name that costs money. which is why i Reasearch. I started to draw up plans for my own kit and they i considered driveshaft angles and the 4 link setup. I dont know much about articulation angles. so i figured i would purchase the kit to make it a little easier. (no headaces) i do liek to do most of my work though, gives you a good feeling plus its custom.
nunk74 the 38s seem large on your rig do they rub? I read about people swapping old ford coils into there rigs. since a few people have done it it might make it easier.

the bouncing problem can be your tires or the angle of your front axle it must be tilted like a bike if you look at the angle of the forks except not so drastic 3 to 5 digress check the angle of you front axle.

You might want to try contacting a local Off-Road Fabrication shop.  They might be able to set you up with a full custom coil setup well within your budget.

yeah they will rub if I flex it all the way out  I havent flexed it yet with the bodylift. So it should have another 3" of room , We dont have many place with rocks in FL , mainly mud and trails so I'm more concerned with  larger tires and ground clearance here its flexed without the bd lift


nunk74 heres the rod ends I used. I can get better pics if needed. There just cheapo tractor links from Tractor Supply. Im not sure how long they will last but like I said I was trying to keep it cheap. Im probably going to use bushings at the frame and upgrade to better hiems on the axles when I get closer to finishing.

I talked to a few shops but they had pretty steep prices for labor. besides I like to do most of my work myself its a good feeling and I know my samurai better.

Hey Draggin'
I got a couple questions about the track bars you made,
Is there any specific geometry to your design or was it trial and error?
Is there a diagnal bar to keep the axle from moving left and right or is that not nesc.?
I'm trying to learn as much as poss. I will be fabing my own here in the next couple weeks.

Distant, I didnt use a 4 link calculator, Kinda just did it. I looked at a few pic of other peoples 4 links and went fom there. The back is a triangulated 4 link and the front is a 3 link with a panhard bar , I tried to keep the angle of the PH with the steering draglink . I used the smaller heims with all the steering, still I will upgrade as needed.
