1993 Tracker 3spd Automatic Problems Shifting
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:58:16 PM »
If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. With that being said here it the problem.

Start up Tracker let warm up.
Goes in reverse fine.
Then shift into drive press gas pedal and it's like it might be in 2nd or 3rd Gear.
Once you get up and going it's fine.
Except when I have to stop or slow down it starts all over again.

That'a be a maybe, on that.  I am wondering if it might have to do with the TV or kick down cable.  I try everything I can before having to buy new trans.

I have a similar problem with mine, except it only stays in 1st for the first few minutes/mile.  If the tranny gets up into the higher RPM range it feels like it free spins until I let it decel.

Tranny shop is looking at it now for some leaks so it may have been caused by low fluid... hopefully.  If not then a new tranny may be in order.

Anyone have any advice on rebuilt trannies... good deals???

Hey Ogre, my 1990 3spd auto does the same thing in cold weather, I find that using the Lucas additive makes a big difference. Mines been doing this for the last 2 winters but I'll hold off on a tranny change until she goes.

My 91 4 door Sidekick did the same thing, and it ended up being stuck valves.i had the tranny flushed and cleaned, which is where an actual cleaner is run through after the old fluid is flushed out.Not just the typical tranny flush where they just remove all the old fluid and fill  it wish fresh.
It works perfect now hot or cold, and has no problems. It even got rid of the annoying Extra Shift, which seems like it shifts into a 4th,non existent gear.
I also replaced my modulator valve at the time, and added Lucas tranny treatment when i refilled her with fresh fluid.
  Hope this helps
