Child seat
« on: June 14, 2005, 01:36:19 PM »
OK guys, here goes; My youngest turned 18 Sunday and we found out Monday we will becoming foster parents for a 2 year old tomorrow!  We have purchased the anchor type car seat for the Taurus, but does anyone have experience with baby seats in Trackers?  It will go in the back seat, of course (glad I didn't toss the back seat out as I had planned...lol) but beyond that I am waaaaaay out of the loop.  While I'm on the subject, who in the Sam Hill designs these things, anyway??!  I don't know what was wrong with the ones my boys rode hundreds of happy miles in, but it wasn't anything like the one I installed tonight.  I'll leave it to you to figure out if my copious perspiration was from temperature and humidity both being in the 80's, or from getting the doggone thing installed properly with the seemingly dozens of straps, clips, anchors, and adjustment points to deal with. Any advice would be appreciated.  All kidding aside, it's all good and we are happy knowing we will make a positive difference in this young lady's formative years. Keep your fingers crossed for us as we move from middle aged parents with nearly an empty nest to being  parents of an active toddler.  Hope she likes to bounce, cause she's gonna learn about dirt roads and NASCAR along with teddy bears and Sunday school. Let the games begin...lol  ;D

From '90 on there should be a couple of plastic plugs in the scuff plate by the rear door seal. Use a screwdriver to lever them out and you can screw in a bolt holding down the anchor. I have the same in both my swb and lwb.

I have had the car seat in both the front and back of my 90.  I use a device called a Mighty Tight.  They sell for around $20 and you can get it at Toy's R Us.  The seat belt loops through it and it allows you to really tighten down the belt.  Also when you pull the seat belt out fully and allow it to retract it will lock so that it cannot be pulled out further unless you release it completely.  With the Tracker having no roof in the rear and no air bags I think it is safer to have the baby in the front seat.

You still need something for the teather strap, I have mine attached to my rear door with a homemade bracket, but access to the door is gone. I'm going to have to look for the plastic plugs......

BTW - Congratulations!  ;)

I think he is talking about the L.A.T.C.H. system that most new car seats have.  Older Trackicks and Sami's don't have provisions for the LATCH system.

Use the Mighty Tite.  They work great.

You should be able to stow or remove the LATCH belts.  Look in your instruction manual.  If you don't have one, look on line or call the manufacturer, they will send you one.

All things must start and end, the key is to not let them start and end in the same place.

Other rigs, 84 Sub 305 High output dana 44 front dana 60 rear turbo 350 tranny, 205 gear drive transfer, 10" lift 38.5 swampers

New seats are designed for high speed impacts, god forbid it never happens. There also designed to keep the child in a certain position. There MIGHT be a guage level thing that you need to put the seat in so this gauge reads a certain way.

Suzuki desinged the back seats, I think anyways, with child seats in mind so chances are no modification of the seat base level thing will be needed. Read the instructions twice and take the seat, minus child, to your local police department to be inspected. My boy is 2 months old and his first ride was in an XL7 with LATCH... LATCH is AWSOME compared to the belt method we had to use on my wife's lexus (which is NOT child seat friendly what so ever).

Also sit on the seat when installing it to compress the cushion. There's some video's on-line that show the proper way to do it, run a search for "Child seat installation video" and they'll pop up.
