the kind with the hooks my club will not allow.

A lot of people hold this stance, mainly for safety reasons and I understand their point.  But it is always amusing on the trail when the strap with the hooks gets pulled out every time someone needs a tug just so we don't have to bother unhooking the clevis every time.  :)

If a vehicle is really stuck we usually just break out the winch rather then trying to tug them out.  If we had full size rigs I would probably take a different stance on the tow straps.

While at work today my buddy got his Nissan pickup stuck.... I was able to pull him out with a 4x4 Honda quad and a tow strap.

We use nylon cable, the same one that they use to attach fishing boat!! about a 1' thick....there though enough to pull big truck and they have good elasticity in it
