PROS CONS 2door/4door.
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:11:56 PM »
What are the pros and cons of the two door over the four door .I have a 95 2 door I may consider selling it and getting a 98 4 door .I'm going to lift and put on bigger tires on either one I keep .Just wondering what are your thoughts between the two? It's not going to be a strictly off road rig and I will also be using it pretty much as a daily driver. I think the 2 doors look really good all lifted and such haven't really seen too many 4 doors lifted give me some input please!

Lifting them is pretty much the same, but I know you can do more fender trimming with a 2 door (only an issue if going bigger than 33" tires I believe).

The shorter wheel base of the 2 door will give you an advantage where tight turning, needing less lift to clear obsticles, and rock crawling. It's lighter, so it should have slightly better gas mileage (2 or 3 MPG?), and a bit more "pep".

The 4 door has significantly more more room, and will be more stable at speed (advantage on trails where you can open up the throttle more). It can also protect the rear passengers in the event of a rollover.

For the kind of camping / wheeling / snowboarding etc I do - I've been happiest with my 4 door as a better "all around" vehicle. It can keep up with 99% of my friends when wheeling - it's only the most extreme of rock crawling / obsticles I shy away from.

After 1.5" OME:

I also have a 4 door, with a 1.5" spacer lift and a 2" body lift. I'm running 30x9.5 tires on it. It's pretty capable in this form and its quite versatile as well. I like the extra room inside vs a 2 door because there is no way I could fit snowboards inside a 2 door. The only thing I don't like about mine is the fact that it high centers more easily than a shorty, and I've always wanted a convertible for the open air feel in the summer time. Oh well, can't have it all I guess.

I have had both, When I had my 4 door I drove it every day and wheeled it every weekend. I miss the extra room, was great for camping or hauling small stuff. The 2 door that I have now I have built more for wheeling than a dd, I like the shorter wheelbase for climbing and turning in tight trails. I guess what I am saying is you have to figure out what you want to do with your rig and then build it to suite YOUR needs. They are both great vehicles in my opinion

I can see that they both have advantages .And I want all the advantages .Mostly though stability at speed mine seams to wander all over the place .I'm actually getting scared of it in slippery conditions. And I have had a lot of winter driving experience .Everything seems to be in order tires may be getting a little down.I'm going to a bigger tire and lift but I'm not to sure I want to spend the money if this thing is going to drive the way it does! The other night at about 60-70 kms coming down the off ramp on the highway. I got the right side into the snow a little as the plow had it plowed a bit funkey .That thing came around so damn quick I never had anytime to react .It hauled me right off into the snow.I can't believe that it never rolled.

Yea, i bought my 2 door this winter thinking it was going to save me all the worrying in the illinois snow as my 2wd ford ranger with the 4.0l sucks.  Basically I just bought the other half of worries.  My sidekick with the tsl's is rock solid at speeds below 30mph.  Anything ablove and you can tell you are light on the wheels especially in the 30-40 mph crosswinds that try to blow you off the road.  Plus I don't feel as safe in it with the size, weight, and lightweight materials.  My ranger really is tough to get going in the snow even with 6 60lb sand bags in the back and good tires.  My zuk has already pulled it out of the snow in my driveway once this year.  But with the long wheel base it feels much more stable and safe going down the road at speed plus it ride a heck of a lot better.  I still love both vehicles but I think the ultimate solution next winter will be to trade up my truck for a 4x4 ranger or mid sized suv.  Also the road noise and coldness of a softop takes some getting used to.  The 2 door zuk is a keeper as its fun as a "playful automobile" to hit trails in the summer and snowhills in the winter.  I think for me the 4 door would loose some of the charm of the short wheelbase version but I wish I had a hard top for my two door (I've been checking ebay!!).  Just my two cents.

I bought my 2 door for a 4seater covertable to drive in the summer.  My DD is a Saturn Vue and my wife drives a GMC Envoy Ext.

If I had to choose between a 2 or 4 door for a daily driver (I have two girls) I would have to go with the 4 door.

If your looking for a fun truck that's mostly just for you, go for the two door.

P.S.  When it was stock I drove it one winter.  I live in Michigan and loved driving it in the snow.  I was also impressed at how warm it was for a simple rag top.

If noise, comfort, and refinement weigh in your decision, there was a world of difference between my stock '96 soft top and stop '03 soft top.
